Advanced Micro Devices on Monday released pricing for the nine models that make up its newly launched quad-core x86 microprocessor family, codenamed "Barcelona."
Officially known as the Opteron 2300 and 8300 series, the CPUs are AMD's first entry in the quad-core space. Market leader Intel launched quad-core chips for servers and workstations, as well as for desktops, on Dec. 13, 2006.
Pricing for 1,000-unit tray quantities of the nine processors ranges from $209 to $1,019. The 2300 series of 2-way quad-core Opteron processors comprises the AMD Opteron 2344 HE (1.7GHz, 55W) at $209, 2346 HE (1.8GHz, 55W) at $255, 2347 HE (1.9GHz, 55W) at $377, 2347 (1.9GHz, 75W) at $316 and 2350 (2.0GHz, 75W) at $389.
The 8300 series of 8-way processors comprises the 8346 HE (1.8GHz, 55W) at $698, 8347 HE (1.9GHz, 55W) at $873, 8347 (1.9GHz, 75W) at $786 and 8350 (2.0GHz, 75W) at $1,019.
By comparison, Intel's Quad-Core Xeon X5365, with a clock speed of 3.0GHz and 120W power consumption is priced at $1,285 in volume.
AMD claims its own benchmarks show that lower clock speed quad-cores outperform the chipmaker's own equivalent dual-cores with higher speeds, thanks to enhancements made to core architecture. AMD says its 2.0GHz Opteron 2350 chips outperform its 3.0GHz dual-cores by 55 percent, and that its 2.0GHz 8350 chips beat their 3.0GHz dual-core cousins by 48 percent.
I want....counting my piggy bank holdings....
This baby doesn't slaughter Core2, leaving only a bloody mist, but it does bring AMD back into the race again. In some cases, it's spanking Intel, but not all.
Performance per Watt is looking VERY nice for Barcelona. Large data centers will love this thing.

I researched processors before I purchased my new computer. I purchased Intel-Q6600 (2.40GH, 1066FSB) 8MB cache and 4GB DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz OC solely to be on cutting edge. I know nothing about them. I took the various PC websites/forum’s and reviewer’s word. I am not a gamer but I do alot of work with PDF’s and digitalizing using OmniPage which OmniPage 16 is suppose to be written for multi-thread use. Don’t know I haven’t loaded it yet. As I understand it software is not real available to utilize these processors yet and my OS which is XP as I understand has limitations also that restrict it. But don’t ask me how. :)
This machine puts out temps of 135 F running at 100%. The wattage blew a few circuit breakers as well, so we had to update the electrical system.
I'd be interested to see what the temps on the back of a machine like this would be if it were running the Barcelona chips...
AnandTech did some power consumption testing in their Barcelona review. They didn't get to keep the systems for real long, but it seems to indicate that they do much better than Intel on that front.
Well, given that the 83xx series only uses 75W, while the Intel quad-cores use 120W, An equivalent machine (63 Barcelona noes vs. 126 Intel nodes) should run a LOT cooler.

It's close to a nightmare to try to review a server CPU in a few days, but we hope we have at least provided you with an idea what AMD's newest quad-core is capable of.

Considering that AMD prices this Opteron 2350 under the Xeon 5345, AMD has an attractive price/performance offering for most applications. The only exception is a chess engine and highly optimized Intel binaries. Although our testing is not finished yet, there is very little doubt that AMD's newest chip is very energy efficient. Add to that the fact that the AMD platform is not burdened with the extra power consumption of FB-DIMMs, and it is clear that the third generation of Opterons will lead in the performance/watt area for a few months.
