Analysis of Photographs, The Ivory Pomegranate Inscription
Biblical Archaeology Review ^ | May 2007 | Hershel Shanks

Posted on 09/11/2007 7:46:24 AM PDT by SunkenCiv

The microscopic image was projected onto a screen as all watched in darkness. It appeared that Lemaire was right. The letter extended into the break. Demsky and Ahituv admitted that the committee report was "mistaken" in concluding that the letter stopped artificially short of the break... But, alas, this letter is adjacent to one of the modern breaks, not the ancient break. Had the letter stopped short of the break, as originally argued by Ahituv, Demsky and Goren, this would have been clear evidence of a forgery. But because the applicable break was a modern break, the fact that the letter does go into the break proved only that the letter had been engraved earlier than the modern break, not that it had been engraved in ancient times... This error by the official committee appointed to judge the pomegranate inscription was nevertheless instructive. It highlighted the fact that five members of the original eight-person committee appointed to judge the authenticity of the pomegranate inscription had simply "gone along" with the judgment of the three other committee members (who did have some expertise in the matter) that the inscription was a forgery... For Lemaire, "It is clear": The left tip of the tov goes into the ancient break, forming a "v" in section. Therefore, the inscription is authentic. For Demsky and Ahituv (and perhaps for the silent Goren), it was otherwise; they could not decide (nor did they give reasons for their indecision).

I thought the Ivory Pomegranate was long known to be a fake?

—He said the pomegranate was re-examined with a new type of microscope that detected synthetic material in the inscription, between the ivory and the patina.—

That story is from 2004 — this conference was held to determine whether the rush-to-judgment “report” from that year held water, and it doesn’t’.

Would I be beclowning myself, over much, if I asked what the significance is of this particular object?

First:
Thanks for the guidance.

Second:
Don’t many in the archeology field hold to the opinion that King Solomon is just a myth?

Not sure where I heard that. Probably on one of the less than depthful History Channel productions or some such.

I hate when that happens!

At one time, the entire Old Testament history was held to be a myth. Archaelogy has been nibbling away at this prejudice.

No, but there are those (Finkelstein for example) who claim that there was nothing much to the Kingdom of Israel, basing that on the Egyptian pseudochronology popularized over a hundred years ago. 18th dynasty Pharaoh Hatshepsut’s bas relief of her voyage to Punt names the port official who greeted her there, and it matches that of a Solomonic-era port official in charge at Ezion Geber.

Hatshepsut's mortuary temple in West Bank at Thebes (modern Luxor) includes detailed depictions of the expedition on its second terrace, including the sea journey and even the reception offered by the chief of Punt. This depictions shows a bearded chief, accompanied by his excessively obese queen who shows signs of lipodystrophy, or decrum's disease. She has a pronounced curvature of the spinal column.

The significance of the ivory pomegranate is in its shape. Most people look at it upside down.

If it is not a fake, it is the world’s first known example of a sex toy.
