Microsoft to Release Vista Fixes in 2008
Excite News ^ | 29 August 2007 | AP

SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said Wednesday it will release a major package of updates and fixes for the Windows Vista operating system in the first half of 2008.

The company said a "beta" test version of Service Pack 1 will be released "in a few weeks to a moderate sized audience." The SP1 beta includes updates Microsoft has already made to the operating system it started selling to consumers at the end of January.

The service pack fixes some common problems that cause computers to crash or freeze, Microsoft said, including compatibility problems with some newer graphics cards, external monitors and printer drivers. Microsoft said it also fixed some problems users had with putting their PCs to sleep and waking them up again.

The company said SP1 is also expected to improve battery performance, increase the speed of copying files and help Internet Explorer run faster on Vista.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker said SP1 also brings several security improvements.

Microsoft said it expects to release Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, Vista's predecessor, in the first half of 2008 as well, but in a statement added that it "should not significantly change the Windows XP experience."

In the past, some of Microsoft's business clients used the release of a service pack as a sign that a new operating system was stable enough to install. Analysts have said Vista seems more reliable out of the box than past versions of Windows, and that businesses need not wait for the service pack.

Microsoft said it expects to release Service Pack 3 for Windows XP,

XP will still be the primary OS for a couple of years at least.

Yeah, but I loved the statement they made about SP3--that it "should not significantly change the Windows XP experience."

IOW--Use Vista, we've improved it!, but we haven't really improved XP at all.

“added that it “should not significantly change the Windows XP experience.”

FWIW, I don’t know of anybody that’s had even close to a “good” experience with Vista.

Methinks copies of XP will be for sale for a long time :)

I just got two new computers with an XP professional operating system and I love them. My old computer had Windows Millenium edition. Microsoft should be shot for releasing that mess.

My other computer had Windows 98. I had them both on my home computer network and as you might imagine, they hated each other.

I had my new home network profesionally set up and the Computer tech told me he wouldn’t sell a computer with a Vista system if he was paid to do it.

Which "analysts" are those?

Ya know, I increasingly see the Redmond group as the gang that couldn’t (can’t) shoot straight.

Vista is the bastard child of Millenium Edition.

I picked up a new machine with Vista in March. Absolutely love it. Unbelievably stable. The only issue (and there have been quite a few) is not with Vista itself, but drivers and software compatibility. It’s getting better, but I think I would have waited a little longer had I known some of the issues I’d have.

If I were Microsoft, I’d put more gaming-specific fixes in this update and make sure gamers know about it. New APIs and a vague promise of more support for newer graphics cards isn’t going to excite gamers who are seeing their speed drop by as much as a third when playing under Vista.

Sounds like it’s closer to the security rollup they released for Win2k, SP4.

Huh?

...is not with Vista itself, but drivers and software compatibility.

Drivers and compatibility are Vista issues.

Been on every Windows Microsoft OS, since 3.1. I'm a power user techie dork. Vista is far and away the best OS I've ever used.

The solution is to switch to Apple. The design philosophy at Microsoft is fatally flawed. It is in their DNA to release sub standard product except for their Office Suite. Guess why: Because the first MS Word and Excel were made exclusively for the Mac so they were forced to use a more stable and intuitive design approach. The Windows OS and IE are light years behind the Mac’s. Use the new IMAC for 5 minutes and you will realize that XP / Vista are total garbage.

Sorry, hit the Post button too soon.

Small to medium businesses I am familiar with are avoiding Vista. One I know of went to a Linux solution. Another switched to Mac.

In both cases the decision makers told me they were tired of Microsoft’s arrogant attitude and software that was buggy and bloated. They also said their users complained about the Vista learning curve and the corresponding decrease in productivity. They were particularly upset that Microsoft chose to take XP features and move them around in Vista for seemingly no good reason.

I pointed out that Linux and Mac also have learning curves. Their response was, “Yes, that’s true but we believe in the long run overall productivity will increase.” (Paraphrased.)
