For a squealin' good time at the fair, make sure to stop by the Hambone Express pig races. You can bet yer bacon they'll be sizzlin' around the track all 11 days of the fair - no tires needed.
The squealers of Hambone Express are known to delight fairgoers as they go "whole hog" around the track, even putting it into "four-squeal drive" to come in first and receive an edible prize.
The show consists of four races with four pigs in each race. The swinemaster assigns cheering sections, with one special cheerleader to lead each section. Then he introduces the celebrity contestants before the first pigs explode through the gates.
The excitement builds as the pigs race to the finish line, delighting the crowd. And the winning pig's prize? A cookie. And it wolfs it down as if it were pig slop.
The 16 racing piglets end up hogging the limelight each day at the fair. In between races, the little porkers are kept in an air-conditioned trailer, complete with its own built-in piggy potty.
According to the Hambone Express Web site, a veterinarian inspects the racing pigs from snout to tail every 30 days. The act's animals meet or exceed the requirements of the USDA Animal Welfare Act as well as state and local regulations.
The well-being of the pigs is Hambone Express' top priority. Their handlers attend to their every need daily.
After all, the pigs are the stars of the show.
