Four teenagers were killed early Thursday morning when the stolen SUV they were in and a train collided.
It happened in Baytown at Archer Road and Fleming around 3:30 a.m.
According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, six teenagers were in the stolen Jeep when the driver apparently did not see a Union Pacific train that had apparently been stalled on the tracks for some time. The SUV slammed into the tanker car at a high rate of speed and went under it into a ditch.
Four people in the backseat, three girls and one boy ages 12 to 15, died at the scene.
Two teenage boys, ages 17 and 15, were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by Life Flight. They were the driver and the front-seat passenger.
Union Pacific said the SUV may have hit the train, gone underneath it and slid into a ditch.
There are no streetlights or lights that indicate that there is a train crossing.
Family and friends of the victims gathered at the scene, including the father of one of the victims.
"It's unbelievable what has happened," Doug Moyers said. "I can see my daughter's big toe sticking out from underneath the white blanket; that's all I can see of her is her big toe."
I can't believe they didn't have anything, especially crossing lights. That could have been any vehichle, being driven by an adult at normal speed, that was killed. It's probably rare that a train gets stalled on the tracks like that at night but, still.
Think of it as Evolution in Action.
I don’t advocate coddling criminals. Sympathy for dead kids and their parents is NOT coddling. If you think it is, you have a horribly skewed view of life. Pitiful.
What happened to my tagline?
“Well, this was a package set of Darwin Award winners...
Think of it as Evolution in Action.”
The 12-year-old in the back seat was wrong to be there but no doubt was led on by the older kids. Similar to the reason we have statutory rape laws — a kid that age doesn’t make rational decisions.
I’m sorry to see you’re so happy they’re dead. Pitiful.
If a train hits an SUV, alas for the SUV. If an SUV hits a train, alas for the SUV.
“If that makes me a bad person to you, so be it.”
I’d say that makes you an awful person and somebody I’m glad I don’t know personally.
So you assume that the 12 and 14 year olds in this case were hardened criminals and were adult enough not to be influenced by th older kids? Would you then also advocate eliminating statutory rape laws, because after all kids that age are obviously in complete control of of their emotions and decision making?
If you live in a place where you’ve had four cars stolen, maybe you should think about living elsewhere? Over the years I’ve owned what used to be the most frequently stolen types of cars in the U.S. and yet I’ve never had even one stolen. Somebody did rifle my glove compartment twice, but there wasn’t anything there to steal.
Read the article linked in my post #100. It confirms the suspicions of A_perfect_lady.
The father of one of the dead girls said, "I knew they were planning on sneaking out. I saw that part before she disabled me on her MySpace..."
Any parent that knows of plans to sneak out and doesn't stop them, or allows his 14 year old to "disable me on her MySpace" will be attending his child's funeral long before he picks up his 'Father of the Year' award. My children would have to sneak out of my bedroom, because that is where they would be, if it came to that. If a parent knows of these plans and does not stop them that is a de facto approval, in my opinion.
“Nature has one unforgivable crime - that being stupidity. The penalty for this crime is often death. When found guilty, the sentence is carried out swiftly; there is no valid legal defense, no appeal, and no emotion from the executioner”.
- Robert A. Heinlein
I’m willing to bet those good things didn’t happen to you on the street. :)
First come first serve. You didn’t state that in your original post. You just said leave them for dead you never said anything about if there were another accident at the same time. Sounds like you are trying to justify your illhearted words after the fact.
several of those girls had just graduated yesterday, like
our son. sadly, they were, apparently, not at the schools
all-night graduation party.
our son attended his class’s all-night grad party and arrived
safely home about 6am. then, went straight to bed.
Hanged.
In remote areas, which was the old “west” and the West - stealing a horse could be a death sentence for the owner. That’s one reason why it was dealt with so severely. The indians were masters at this. There was no way to lock anything up, which is really why “frontier justice” sort of prevailed.
Couldn’t see a parked train ... while driving a stolen vehicle so it’s the track crossings fault. That’s rich.
No need for the Darwin award, but chalk one up for the value of airbags.
Oh, I do consider myself morally superior to car thieves. Yes indeed. You got me there, no argument. I personally haven't said a word about the parents.
