Four kids in stolen SUV die when it hits train

Four teenagers were killed early Thursday morning when the stolen SUV they were in and a train collided.

It happened in Baytown at Archer Road and Fleming around 3:30 a.m.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, six teenagers were in the stolen Jeep when the driver apparently did not see a Union Pacific train that had apparently been stalled on the tracks for some time. The SUV slammed into the tanker car at a high rate of speed and went under it into a ditch.

Four people in the backseat, three girls and one boy ages 12 to 15, died at the scene.

Two teenage boys, ages 17 and 15, were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by Life Flight. They were the driver and the front-seat passenger.

Union Pacific said the SUV may have hit the train, gone underneath it and slid into a ditch.

There are no streetlights or lights that indicate that there is a train crossing.

Family and friends of the victims gathered at the scene, including the father of one of the victims.

"It's unbelievable what has happened," Doug Moyers said. "I can see my daughter's big toe sticking out from underneath the white blanket; that's all I can see of her is her big toe."

“Well Doug, if her big toe was sticking out from underneath the comforter on her bed, she would still be alive.”

~~

That’s a pretty damn heartless & ignorant comment.

Heartless? Maybe. Ignorant? No way. What he said was very well true and was my first thought when I read that.

I have a 19 year old neice that always called after 10pm to let my brother know she was inbound. She never hung out with anyone not from her Christian School. She is a good girl with stern, strict parents, and God in her heart. She would have had enough sense to stay in bed rather than sneak out and incur the wrath of her parents (and me).

If the parents had instilled proper values in their children, they would have been waking up that morning to go to church, go to school, or go to work instead of riding around with a deceased felon.

I thought 4 innocent toddlers were strapped in their car seats when their mother was forced out of the van at gunpoint by a carjacker.

Come on, get with the program. IT'S AN SUV. It doesn't need a carjacker, it does evil all by itself. It's probably been waiting years for just such an opportunity to commit such a crime. ;-)

Sadly, there's a coincidence in Northern Virginia:

Police: 4 Teens Dead After Beltway Crash

SPRINGFIELD, Va. -- Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate a Beltway crash that killed four female teenagers Thursday night.

Police said the vehicle the teenagers were riding in was involved in a crash with a tractor-trailer on the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway shortly before 11 p.m., according to police.

Police said it appears the driver decided to get off the Beltway and take the southbound Interstate 95 flyover ramp, but then changed her mind and tried to get back onto the Beltway.

It was at that time a tractor-trailer struck the vehicle the teens were riding in from behind, police said.

Police said the driver crossed over what is called a safety margin in the area, which is a 10- to 12-foot-wide area with white lines. Officials said it is an area motorists are not supposed to drive into.

Officials said a repaving operation was under way on that portion of the Beltway at the time of the crash

A fifth teenage girl was transported to Fairfax Hospital with serious injuries, but hospital officials said her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

That’s a pretty damn heartless & ignorant comment.

Heartless, maybe. Ignorant, absolutely not. If she had been in her bed (where she belonged at 3:30 a.m.) she couldn't have been dead in a ditch, could she?

If it was just wild driving, I would have more sympathy...kids do stupid things.

Since they stole the freakin’ car, I have less sympathy (at least for the thief).

Hey, if they didn’t steal the vehicle but were driving stupidly, they and their parents get a little sympathy. Not too much, though. At least they didn’t jump off a 3,000-foot cliff. (sarc)

OK, that comment wasn’t ignorant. Definitely heartless.

“However, in today’s litigious society, they are more likely looking in the phone book for the number of ‘the tough, smart lawyer’ or the latest John Edwards, so they can fill their bank accounts via the blood of their juvenile delinquent offspring.”

Maybe they will, but I can tell you from personal experience that’s almost certainly not what they’re thinking right now, even in today’s society.

Last time I looked, no state executes people for grand larceny.

No, but sometimes Mother Nature does.

I have to agree with you. My thoughts and prayers go to their parents also. They are suffering greatly right now and all some can do is make crass jokes. When my brothers, cousins, friends and I were growing up, we did plenty of things that could have ended in tragedy. I would hope that if I had been killed doing something “stupid” that people would have refrained from ridiculing my parents.

And we should celebrate that?

As you can imagine, I’m glad he wasn’t hung (or killed galloping the horse into a train) for one stupid mistake.

Of course. Otherwise *you* would not have been born, and what would the rest of us do then?

Good Lord.
The parents of these kids (12 years old..out after 9pm?)
should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. What in the world....
Oh,never mind. It’s someone else’s fault. It always is.

There’s probably a lot of guilt, but I can assure you shame isn’t their main feeling right now.

I’m not sure. I guess there’d be more cruel and heartless comments on this thread.

More outrageous quotes from the parents in this article:

http://www.click2houston.com/news/13500969/detail.html

Most notably:

"The only thing I can say is my daughter made a bad decision," said Dawson Moyers, Macy's father. "I knew they were planning on sneaking out. I saw that part before she disabled me on her MySpace. I saw that they were making plans. I tried to stop those plans."

I knew they were planning on sneaking out.??? ...before she disabled me on her MySpace.???

With parents like this, it is a wonder these kids survived till 12 and 14.
