Four kids in stolen SUV die when it hits train

Four teenagers were killed early Thursday morning when the stolen SUV they were in and a train collided.

It happened in Baytown at Archer Road and Fleming around 3:30 a.m.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, six teenagers were in the stolen Jeep when the driver apparently did not see a Union Pacific train that had apparently been stalled on the tracks for some time. The SUV slammed into the tanker car at a high rate of speed and went under it into a ditch.

Four people in the backseat, three girls and one boy ages 12 to 15, died at the scene.

Two teenage boys, ages 17 and 15, were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by Life Flight. They were the driver and the front-seat passenger.

Union Pacific said the SUV may have hit the train, gone underneath it and slid into a ditch.

There are no streetlights or lights that indicate that there is a train crossing.

Family and friends of the victims gathered at the scene, including the father of one of the victims.

"It's unbelievable what has happened," Doug Moyers said. "I can see my daughter's big toe sticking out from underneath the white blanket; that's all I can see of her is her big toe."

“So the kids are not responsibie for their own miserable fate, nor are the parents responsible for their children?”

Did I say that? I don’t think so. There certainly shouldn’t be a lawsuit.

But celebrating their deaths, as some are doing here, is asinine.

I tell you what, though. I’m not insisting on death for the first offense. A vicious flogging that leaves them unable to sit for a week would satisfy me. Is that civilized enough for you?

How does one not see a train?

Ignorance. Blinded by the failure to know right from wrong.

There may have been no lights but surely there was a crossing sign to indicate that there was a RR Crossing ahead. The vehicle had headlights and could see the void between the railcars and the void underneath the railcar and the siloutte of the wheels and whatnot. Also I’m pretty sure most but maybe not all railcars have reflective stips of tape maybe a foot long strip every couple of feet down the side of the railcar. Then again what do I know??

It is sickening that some on here are celebrating the deaths... that said, not one damn dime should go to "reimburse" the families of the perpetrators, or anyone EVER killed or injured in the commission of a crime. Any suits filed by these families should be dismissed without further action... if there were justice.

Mighty kind of you.

Oddly enough, my great grandfather was convicted at age 17 of stealing a horse in Augusta Co., Va. He did some time. While he doing time he learned carpentry and later became a master cabinetmaker. He never stole anything again that I know of, and we still have pieces of his furniture in our family.

As you can imagine, I’m glad he wasn’t hung (or killed galloping the horse into a train) for one stupid mistake.

Can I raise you another 10 and say that not wearing seatbelts was a factor?

I agree. My prayers go out to the families. Yes the kids did something they shouldn’t have and I can’t say there should be much if any blame put on UP. I’ve done my share of stupidness and if one little thing went wrong then I would have been killed. Yes these kids did wrong but I still feel sorry for their parents and pray for their souls. God has reasons for why things like this happens but we as humans can’t comprehend why because we are only human. Hopefully this will tragedy will save other lives.

I’ve seen droves of railcars without reflective tape on them. I agree there should have been signs. We’ll have to wait and see.

I am an insurance defense lawyer. There will definitely be a lawsuit.

And the insurance company will settle for a couple of hundred thousand dollars because it's cheaper than going to trial?

I doubt you’d say that if that was your kid. Don’t say it couldn’t or wouldn’t happen to your kid because you don’t know what stupid sh-t kids will get into. That was pretty harsh.

“Well Doug, if her big toe was sticking out from underneath the comforter on her bed, she would still be alive.”
~~

That’s a pretty damn heartless & ignorant comment.

There’s a whole lot of that on this thread.

At that same time, would you be saying that if those resources such as the copter and rescue crews were being used while a real emergency of pure accident involving a drunk driver and you with your family in critical condition?

Cry me a river. You might as well say that the gang-banging crack-whore used to be a cute little baby with a mother that loved her. I prefer to think of them as the scum of the earth who need to be eradicated.

I am not without sin and do indeed believe in redemption, but I've never been involved in anything like this and feel that God is the best judge for the next world. To ask me to tolerate swinish animalistic behavior in this world is an invitation to acceptance of the savages.

Most of you haven’t the slightest idea what their parents are going through right now.

If their parents are blaming themselves and thinking of all the things they could have done differently to raise their children better, good. However, in today's litigious society, they are more likely looking in the phone book for the number of 'the tough, smart lawyer' or the latest John Edwards, so they can fill their bank accounts via the blood of their juvenile delinquent offspring. Any guilt or grief is simply them reaping what they sowed.

Jumping off a 3000 ft cliff would be irresponsible but not illegal. The result would be the same as this. Sometimes irresponsible actions lead to death (regardless of what the law or lawyers say).

Would you say that someone who jumped off a 3000 ft cliff “deserved” to die?

Back seat kids probably lost their heads. Front seat kids must have seen what was coming and ducked.

It’s good that dad only saw the toe.
