What's Your Favorite Television Show?

Posted on 05/15/2007 8:52:16 AM PDT by HungarianGypsy

I don't watch too much television, but one of my favorite shows is Supernatural on the CW.

So, I was just curious about what other Freepers like to watch.

"What was that thing chasing him that looked like a giant ping pong ball?"

That was "Rover." "He" was played by a weather balloon (the original plans were for "him" to be played by a white VW Beetle with the windows painted over).

"Orange alert! Orange alert!"

I watch home improvement shows. I watch Naruto, Inuyasha, Futurama and a few other cartoons on Cartoon Network (while dodging Ed, Edd and Eddie and My Gym Partner is a Monkey and mourn for the days of I.M. Weasel and Cow and Chicken and Dexter’s Laboratory).

I watch Flip this House sometimes, and occasionally CSI

But mostly I leave it off. Why am I paying for cable when I don’t hardly use it?

Ah, yes, Northern Exposure - I had kind of forgotten about that - kind of quirky, but funny. Come to think of it, some people might describe me like that (or mebbe just quirky) :-P

Nothing wrong with liking good quality kid’s shows in my book! Did you ever see “The Weekenders” on Nickelodean? Great little show - usually had a pretty good story line, with a moral no less...

I was crazy about Northern Exposure! But then it went downhill for me when they began to rely upon dreams way too much. Then the doctor left. It really crumbled apart at the end. It would have been great if they could have maintained the quality of the shows.

Do you remember while it was on I think it was ABC News Overnight used to list the town {Cicily, Alaska} as a city giving the next days forecast? Temperature something like 72 degrees even in the dead of winter? LOL Then some genius figured out there was no such place and complained LOL..

No. I don’t remember that but it is funny!

I also enjoyed that “Southern Exposure” show that was on briefly. I guess it was so bad I was the only life form that watched it. Remember it was about a group of American medical students who were attending school on a Caribbean island? I enjoyed the lush scenery, brightly painted houses, and the little cultural tidbits.

No but I remember Due South.. Where the Mountie was talking to a dead realative played by Leslie Neilsen LOL.. I did like Northern Exposure though especially where the rich guy and bar owner tried to bury a friend way out in the sticks as his last request..Didn’t they ever read the Cremation of Sam McGee? BTW what I was talking about with the forecast may have been on an overnight news program called World News Now.

How do you determine if the shows you watch are educational or simply entertainment?

PBS:
Nova (selected episodes)
Red Green Show (Tim Allen so ripped off this show in some ways for Home Improvement)

Discovery/TLC:
Myth Busters (super smart, funny, sexy nerds who like to blow stuff up and fire guns – so what’s not to like?)
Dirty Jobs (Mike Rowe – sigh!) And now every time I scoop the cat’s litter box I find myself saying “I’m scooping Poo. I’m Mike Rowe and this is a dirty job”.
Little People – Big World
What Not to Wear (yes it’s shallow but I like to see the before and afters)

History Channel:
Just about anything

Bravo:
Project Runway and Top Designer

Regular Cable:
Special Report with Brit Hume
Re-runs of Seinfeld
South Park
Re-runs of Futurama
Re-runs of Law and Order- SVU
Re-runs of Sex in the City (yea, I know, but it is well written)
The Weather Channel (especially when there is a hurricane)
ESPN and The Golf Channel

HBO:
The Sopranos
Rome

Network TV:
Two and a Half Men
20-20 - but only when John Stossel is on
The Simpsons

Uh-oh. Was I supposed to do that? :’)

If the show is supposed to be educational, and has a lot of chaff, then it’s entertainment; however, sometimes shows for kids are very educational, yet are basically entertainment shows. That’s due to the small amount of education young folks can deal with without getting bored and wandering off.

Adult fare that is supposed to be educational is often a little off here and there IMHO.

Mostly I think adults watch stuff which titillates, but generally, and regardless, all successful series shows have an addictive quality, and very often that involves teasing games and the like, stuff we like to think we grew out of in high school, and if not in high school, then in college, and if not in college, then after succumbing to the charms of a young divorcee’ met at the first real job one has after high school and/or college, then getting married, then divorced, and saddled with $35,000 of credit card debt and a bad credit rating due to having her default on your first mortgage, after she gets the house and promises to make the payments before the paperwork is done...

But I digress...

So very true, with the addition IMHO that the RGS is funny, while Tim Allen and HI never was. Years ago I couldn't stand the RGS, but in recent years I've come around to it, enjoy it quite a bit. The guys who think up and put together those Rube Goldberg ideas for the show deserve an Emmy.

Not interested in your TNG VHS collection. We have one of our own. LOL Also, TOS and DS9 on VHS. DS9 had some of the best episodes of any drama ever aired on TV. “Rocks and Shoals” and “The Visitor” come to mind. I think you should give it another chance. Voyager, well, we’re desperate so we don’t miss a rerun on SpikeTV. And ST Enterprise? Just icky. Scott Bakula was the worst Captain EVER. We never missed an episode, though. Sad.
