The March 16 recall of 91 pet food products manufactured by Menu Foods wasn't big news at first. Early coverage reported only 10-15 cats and dogs dying after eating canned and pouched foods manufactured by Menu. The foods were recalled -- among them some of the country's best-known and biggest-selling brands -- and while it was certainly a sad story, and maybe even a bit of a wake-up call about some aspects of pet food manufacturing, that was about it.
At first, that was it for me, too. But I'm a contributing editor for a nationally syndicated pet feature, Universal Press Syndicate's Pet Connection, and all of us there have close ties to the veterinary profession

NO ONE in the article has blamed Bush. The hysteria seems to be here on Freeper.
Its a far fetch to go from a comment that Rosie made ( the comment used to point out how far off the FDA was, not to bash Bush) to say that this article is “anti Bush.”
There are people who eat pet food, I’m told.
If ADM is behind this pet food scandal, you could make an argument that Bush is the cause of it. He is well documented to be funded by ADM execs in his campaign funds.
You have made very articulate and well reasoned points. I agree with you.
I don’t want MORE government either...I want more Effective and monitored government. the media should inform us, Rosie is just stupid beyond belief and the author mentioning her comment pointed out HOW the media does not help us.
I am now upset with vets also, and the whole pet food industry. I wonder how everyone would feel if these Baby Food companies had this gluten in their food cause of cost.?
Maybe that explains why some people act like animals. ;~))
Wow! An excellant, articulate post. You covered so many issues better than I could.
You are right in pointing out all the buck passing! I am also Chino-phobic...if that means I don’t trust other countries that do not have the same attitudes we have towards individuals or animals.
Thanks for the heads-up. I will watch his re-run tonight. Christie is definitely a liberal, I know this. (how can you live and work in SF and not be?) But she is passionate about animals and has done a lot of good on a lot of dog lists for pet owners. She’s a tough cookie and can be very blunt.
I don’t know why they moved it.... right away, too. I pinged the mod and didn’t receive a response.
I’ve seen people make those claims on other dogs lists I’m on, not to mention when people start emailing it to absolutely everyone. I always take those with a grain of salt; this is something I’m not taking with a grain and it is important and I am irritated that it was moved to chat.
This afternoon on Inside Edition they had a woman on who said her dog stopped eating and to get it to eat she started getting down and eating the food and then trying to get the dog to eat....then the dog gets to vomiting and she isn't feeling well and the vet didn't know why....no one knew because Menu had held back announcing the recall in the USA (announced in Canada only initially with specific instructions not for release in US).

Well of course this should not be taken with a grain of salt. I also believe that this is very important. There are ramifications for our own food supply. This absolutely needs to be investigated completely and adjustments made in the way we do things here.
The only point I was trying to make is that the frivolous email forwards that people pass along without bothering to check to see if they are true or not are partly to blame for delays in action being taken. And it possibly could explain why there was a lag time getting this very important information to the public. It could also be true that there was just plain negligence or an attempt to cover up. I don’t know.
I don’t remember people getting this over wrought during the peanut butter or spinach problems.
I’m an animal lover myself. I can surely understand the pain that owners are going through who have lost their pets. They have a right to be angry. This isn’t over yet and still there are things to be learned. I don’t think there is enough information yet to make any judgements about what really happened.
Interesting. I'm glad my kitchen is 95% gluten free.
We buy food from China? That’s nuts. What do they put gluten into?
I still don't think we've seen the last of the recalls, and I am not at all certain that tainted wheat gluten from China hasn't ended up in human food.
Don't eat Peanut butter so that only registered in the back of my head,.
A lot of things.... amazing when you read labels. Corn gluten as well as wheat gluten are used to up the protein and for thickeners.
You’d be surprised what “they” put wheat gluten into. It is in pudding mix, salad dressing, canned soup, all sorts of breads and crackers, etc. Currently, there are no laws requiring most food manufacturers to put on their labels the source of their wheat gluten (or any other ingredients for that matter. A few exceptions — bagged salad producers have to specify if ingredients come from another country. I had a nice chat this afternoon with someone at Campbell’s Soup, who informed me that they bought all of their wheat gluten from domestic producers and tested each batch before using it. I sure hope she was being truthful, but have no reason to believe she was not.
Did you watch the interview? Anderson Cooper is a huge pet lover so I can imagine him doing this report. He personally helped rescue pets in NOLA.
