Yes get another pet immediately, as soon as you can find the right one. It is amazing how much it soothes your grief. I had to wait about 5 weeks until the pup was 8 weeks old so she could be shipped to me but I got a full sister to the 1 1/2 year old that had died. Some of us get so attached that we become despondent and getting another one soon is the answer not suicide but there may have been other things going on with this couple.

It's a good thing they didn't choose tropical fish as pets.

And I suppose they thought they were going off to Doggy Heaven and would be reunited with Fluffy.

"Sorry to disagree with the sentiment I see here, but there are a lot of elderly folks who develop a very strong emotional attachment to their pets. These people are obviously outside the average, but I wouldn't condemn pets in principle as I see some doing on here."
What a terrible attitude!! Where are your sick jokes and sharp putdowns? Let's ridicule these dead folks. Isn't that the purpose of the Internet?

Well said, I knew of an elderly person whose whole existence was to care for her beloved dog. No one came around to see her but her companion dog was always there.

But are there any recorded incidents of a pet commiting suicide after it's human died?
***
Not exactly, but some can become despondent. When a distant cousin on my mother's side passed away, his beloved collie, who was in good health at the time, just went downhill and was gone a few weeks later. They can become depressed just like humans, and depression can lead to physical maladies, some potentially fatal.

We named our cat "Mr. Cat". The name stuck even after she got pregnant.

Elderly couple?

Well, in some parts of the world where lifespans are short because of inadequate healthcare, those ages are considered elderly.

There was this song once that dealt with that.
"Dead Puppies"
Dead puppies aren't much fun. They don't come when you call, they don't chase squirls at all, dead puppies aren't much fun.
