UNABLE to come to terms with the death of their pet dog, a childless couple in southern India hanged themselves. The bodies of 67-year-old retired soldier C.N. Madanraj and his wife, Tarabai, 63, were found yesterday in their home in a suburb of Hyderabad.

Police said the childless couple had held a burial ceremony for their dog of 13 years, called Puppy, and hosted a feast for friends before hanging themselves in their bedroom.

"The couple described the grief over their pet dog in the suicide note they left on March 29," said police inspector V. Anantaiah.

Elderly couple in south India commit suicide after the death of their pet Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

HYDERABAD, India An elderly couple in south India was so devastated by the death of their dog they committed suicide.

Police say the couple left behind a note saying they were ending their lives over the loss of "Puppy."

The 66-year-old man and his 63-year-old wife were found hanging in their home yesterday after neighbors told police about a foul smell coming from the home.

The note also requested the police to inform their relatives about their death and the couple left behind money for their funeral.

The man's nephew says "They were so shocked and saddened by the loss of their companion that they performed a formal funeral. They wrapped its body in cloth and buried in the backyard of their home."

If they are in their 60's this can't be the first pet they've lost. What kept them from committing suicide the last time? I think there's more going on here than reported.

Well, since we have pet owners here who have their dead pets freeze-dried so they can have them always with them, sitting on their favorite cushion or whatever, I guess we really can't criticize. Completely unreal. Talk about messed up priorities.

The best treatment for the loss of a pet is to get another pet. It really beats hanging yourself.

Just not right away. Wait a month, or in these weirdo's case, a couple months 1st. I bet they were not this upset when their parents kicked it.

It's not as though they were completely alone in the world--the article says they had a nephew, which also implies at least a sibling. They could have found love outside of themselves with other family members, or consoled each other. Very odd.

Frankly reading things like this, one feels that nobody hurts India's image the way Indians do.

About dead pets, well here's an offer from Delhi, which nobody can refuse-I'll send you a dozen dogs free of cost( also 6 cows as compliments for the first 10 customers)!!!!!!

What is so surprising about that??Adoption procedures are pretty taxing in India & fertility treatment became affordable to most people only 20 or so years ago.

Folks...I would suggest you go easy here. It is all too easy to discount these people as whack jobs with their priorities mixed up, but there are many elderly people to whom thier pets are nearly the sole source of companionship in their lives. Sure, they may have children, but they may not see them for lengthy periods of time. Religion should give them comfort if they believe, but even to them the actual physical interaction with a pet has a lot of value.

Sorry to disagree with the sentiment I see here, but there are a lot of elderly folks who develop a very strong emotional attachment to their pets. These people are obviously outside the average, but I wouldn't condemn pets in principle as I see some doing on here.
