But are there any recorded incidents of a pet commiting suicide after it's human died?

Not exactly, but some can become despondent. When a distant cousin on my mother's side passed away, his beloved collie, who was in good health at the time, just went downhill and was gone a few weeks later. They can become depressed just like humans, and depression can lead to physical maladies, some potentially fatal.

There are cases of pets who just sort of "give up" on life after their human dies, sometimes to the point where their health goes into a (literal) death spiral.

Greyfriars Bobby didn't commit suicide, but kept vigil at his master's grave in Edinburgh for 14 years. Got a statue and a movie out of it...much better than committing suicide.

If the Indian couple were believers in reincarnation, they should have considered the possibility that they might be reincarnated as fleas.

My dog went into mourning for a while after my mom died. He would sit by the picture window for hours waiting for her to come home (like he used to do when she went out on walks.)

When my grandfather died in 1967 his Mastiff mix dog refused to eat anything and sat under his master's chair for 2 weeks. Old Jiggs had to be put down. He gave up his will to live. I guess thats close enough.
