UNABLE to come to terms with the death of their pet dog, a childless couple in southern India hanged themselves. The bodies of 67-year-old retired soldier C.N. Madanraj and his wife, Tarabai, 63, were found yesterday in their home in a suburb of Hyderabad.

Police said the childless couple had held a burial ceremony for their dog of 13 years, called Puppy, and hosted a feast for friends before hanging themselves in their bedroom.

"The couple described the grief over their pet dog in the suicide note they left on March 29," said police inspector V. Anantaiah.

Nope. But there is always a first one that hurts more than the others.

Pets ARE NOT more VALUABLE than humans.

But they are more valuable than YOU.

A music store near my childhood home had a dog called J.D. - short for "Just a Dog."

When I was a kid we had a pooch named Pooch.

Years later I got a puppy and we named her Puppy.

We were not considered clever people.

Sad that someone would dtake human lives over the life of a mere dog. Dogs can be replaced. Humans can't.

Yes, I would say they could have made better judgment. But old-age and loneliness can bring in depression, which is too overwhelming for some people. Hard choices, probably. I can just hope I'm never stuck with the choices they had, ever.

64 years ago, in 1943, the US minted steel pennies...were they called lead pennies?

I've seen them called "US Wartime Steel Cents," and "Steel Pennies." I remember them being called lead pennies. I've read there was more zinc than steel in them. I don't know what the official name is.

Dogs know a dead body when they see/smell it, so when a person or another dog/pet dies in the family, it's important to let them actually see/smell/say goodbye to the person or other dog/pet. That way they know what happened and can process it, and they aren't confused and waiting by the door for the person/other dog/pet to come home. This doesn't mean they won't also grieve, but at least they know the person/pet died, not just that they are lost or gone for a long time.

I also say slow down. There may have been other factors at work here. Yes, people say they loved their pet but we only know what the news outlet is telling us. After all, they're dead, the news can say anything about them. For those of you who don't think they are elderly .. If the word "elderly" is misused in this story why assume everything else is correct?

I think you're confusing the 2 materials. IIRC the 1944 issues were made from shell casings, largely zinc. The 1943 were "steel".

But then, I haven't paid attention to my coin-collecting for a long while. Could be forgetting the details.

Good point.

However, I would remind people that 63 years old is young in this country because our lifestyle is pretty affluent, but in other countries, a long hard life might make a 63 year old person ancient.

Not to say that is the case, but it IS India...we don't know what part.

Dead puppies aren't much fun. They don't come when you call, they don't chase squirls at all, dead puppies aren't much fun.

My puppy died late last fall. He's still rotting in the hall. Dead puppies aren't much fun.

Mom says puppy's days are through. She's going to throw him in the stew. Dead puppies aren't much fun.

Amazing how much I remember from Dr. Demento days.

Off topic, but the non-muslim Indians have a very low birth rate...kinda akin to EU. The muslims have a birth-rate that's out of this world.

Also, the non-Muslim Indians practice female infanticide. There's a growing ratio between boy & girl babies.

Big-time problems later. Frustrated men, no women around to reproduce. The non-Muslims are digging their own graves.

Agreed.

Different people deal with grief in different ways.

Prayers for this poor couple.

Certainly people are different and different strokes for different folks. I can barely remember my first dog, the first I can remember well was a Scottie and I found his body after he had been hit by a car. I think I was 6.

I know people who were so hurt by the loss of their 1st dog they they could not ever let themselves or their children experience dog ownership again. If they had gotten another one I think they would have adjusted quicker.

That is sad.

Like the old adage, if your horse throws you off the best thing to do is get right up and get back on again. Otherwise your fear could become so all encompassing that you never got back on again. Also the horse learns that he has beaten you.

BTW, I do treat my dogs like they were children. 2 Jack Russels sleep right next to me in bed and a hound dog sleeps on the floor. The hound waits for me to cover her with a blanket before she closes her eyes. I have some really spoiled dogs. ;9)
