Now, on to tonight’s topic: summer. What’s your favorite thing to do during the summer? Do you have anything you do every summer? What are your plans for this summer?
Usually, I look forward to going to the beach. My grandmother lives two blocks from the beach in the Isle of Palms. However, this summer, I’m more excited about going to Vermont. Why? Because that is where my adorably newborn nephew lives. And hopefully, I get to spend an entire month with him this summer. :)

Like I said, I realize I ain't right in the head. ;-)
Vermont typically has a month where it's below zero (not freezing - zero) every night, and some years we have at least a week where the temperature stays well below zero even during the day. It's a different kind of cold - it doesn't just feel cold, it stings, and your face feels stiff, and ice and snow almost feel dry underfoot.
And I like having at least *some* of that weather. Without it, I keep waiting for winter to really kick in...feels like there wasn't one here. I also like it when it snows and the ground STAYS snowy for more than just a few days. Usually the snow doesn't melt entirely in Northern Vermont until at least April.
I'm thinkin' one of these days I'll have to at least visit Alaska.

August 8th 1996 (no I'll never forget this). I was up in the mountains around Missoula visiting an old ghost town called "Garnett" Montana.
Spent the day (cool not cold) wandering through the old buildings there and just enjoying imagining what it would have been like to live there back when it was a real mining town.
Toward the end of the day it began to cloud up pretty good, good thick black clouds so I decided to start back down the mountain since the only road at the time didn't look like it was alot better than the wagon trail that originally had been carved through the woods. I hadn't gotten out of the parking lot before big silver dollar sized snowflakes began to coat my windshield. I knew I was in trouble because my truck at the time wasn't 4wd.
Made it down the mountain ok thankfully.. but over half the trip was skii'd :)
Ever try skiing in a pickup truck? lol
August 8th, summer isn't over and it's snowing. No thanks, I need to get back where snow is something you see in a little glass water bubble LOL.
I know, I might have to photoshop that graphic...
Maybe put The Mascot in a bowl of ice cream. Or a small glass of Guinness...8^)
I'm lucky. I'm in a grad-only program and they discourage teaching by tenure-track faculty during the summer. I hear that our college town is blissfully quiet during the summer. Most of the students go home, and I expect any faculty person w/any seniority has taken off for more exotic parts. I'll practically have the town to myself. : )

You aren't kidding about the weather. I went to Madison in March a few years ago and thought I would freeze to death. Even Ann Arbor was never so cold, and I thought it was an icebox there.
Now I'm an old hand. I went to DC the other week and the weather was a bit rough. My mother asked if I should go out and I said in Iowa I had waited for the bus in -21 degree weather. Any day I don't have to put on 2 layers of clothes and a balaclava is a good day!
That's nothin.
I've been known to wear my hawaiian shirt in 9 degree weather...
You should, everyone should.
You probably want to visit in the summer though...
Fairbanks summer pastime, watch the sun go around the sky in a circle instead of rising and setting.

I think the Rockies just about beat all for sudden storms! Must have been a scary experience.
I spent about eight months in northern Colorado last year. It's totally flat right up until you get into the foothills - from where we were, you could look west towards the mountains and watch storms come barreling down. Could see lightning storms come toward you from miles away - really cool!
Unless you're huntin' gators ;)
Georgia's my home, I need to go back there. It's been far too many years.
Georgia's a great state. I lived in Columbus for a year or so, and have killed many a brain cell in Savannah (River Street...fun, fun, fun!). But I love the West....Boise's my new adopted hometown. Good luck and Godspeed.

Tough to fish for rainbow and brown trout in GA I would imagine.
That said, I can't wait to get up on the Clearwater River this summer to try to hook some bull trout. Can't keep 'em, but I've never caught one, so it'll be a lot of fun just the same.
