(Vanity) New computer vs. RPG... HELP!

Posted on 03/25/2007 5:29:51 AM PDT by yankeedame

Hey gang,

Once again, with hopeful heart, I turn to my fellow FReepers for some advice. In a nutshell:

(...but I digress)

Anyway, I am now looking for another RPG. One that will take/run on Vista and DX10. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

--YD

I saw the title and thought of a computer being blown up by a rocket-propelled grenade.

I would suggest purchasing a copy of Windows XP (Get XP Home, it is cheapest), wiping your disk and installing XP. When Everquest is updated to work with Vista, you can reinstall Vista from the materials given to you with your new computer.

This is, I believe your only choice if you wish to play Everquest now.

I hate to recommend this course of action to people. I use a Mac, and people often think I do this as a way of poking at Windows users, but nothing could be further from the truth. Windows is a better gaming platform. I just hate to present such a stark choice.

If you cannot install Windows, take it to COMPUSA or someplace like that and pay them to do it.

LOL! Er...How about a piece of this humble pie I'm munching on? Doesn't RPG stand for role-playing-game?

(I mean, as well as rocket propelled grenade, smarty pants!)

Anti-Microsoft Sarcasm TorpedoTM ARMED. FIRE!!

I've often been tempted to use an RPG (rocket-powered grenade) on my Windows box, too.

My next home computer will be a Mac.

Cheers!

Thank you, rlmorel, I knew I could depend on your gallantry.

Check out Lord of the Rings Online. I've been playing the beta for a few weeks and it's pretty good. Nice graphics, very nice skill development model (for example, as you use a particular combat skill you earn "points" towards an improved version of that skill, separate from the "experience points" you get for slaying the monster), and a rich questing system.

Also, if you're into crafting, they have have some nice twists: a slight chance to create an enhanced item and the addition of optional components to augment the item.

The economy has a few problem, IMHO, like horse rides and repairs costing an arm-and-a-leg for lower level characters.

"That said, dump Vista for now and run XP."

Bingo!

The rule of thumb for all MS products is steer clear until at least SP2 has been released.

Try WOW (world of warcraft) They put a lot of thought into their game.

Anything that will run on Vista will run on DX10.

DX10 is simply a name for the latest generation video card.

The question is whether the game will use the increased capabilities of the new technology. For the answer to that, go to the grocery store and pick up a copy of Maximum PC magazine. They specialize in games and the hardware needed to play them.

It's interesting that you would pay an extra $500 for the latest video card without investigating which games take advantage of it.

Well, (blush, blush) actually, you give me more credit then I'm entitled to. You see, it came with the system. I didn't even know what a DX is/was

I second that motion.

Vista is nowhere near ready for general use by people who use PCs as you do.

Stick with XP. You can probably get a WinXP SP2 install disk from just about anyone to use for the install.
As for your license, save a little dough and buy just the license Here at TrustPrice.com

I wouldn't ditch my favorite game because of a new, and marginally useful operating system. Install XP Pro, and have a nice day.

I don't know you experience with these folks, but mine is that selling licenses is illegal, and when you go to do updates you find out the software is pirated. The "open license" is intended for use within a corporation.
