The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been informed that Menu Foods, Inc., a private-label pet food manufacturer based in Statesville, Ontario, Canada, is recalling all its "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food produced at its facility in Emporia, Kansas between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007.

Menu Foods, Inc. has identified the potentially contaminated products on the Internet at www.menufoods.com/recall.

Not sure who makes Pedigree?

Masterfoods makes Pedigree. They are a division of MARS which makes M&M's and Snickers. :o)
I found all this out while researching our dog food.

Your comment about confusion gave me a chuckle. Join the club:) I've been through the subQ thing, more than once. Good luck with your cat. One of mine made it to 22, but she didn't have kidney failure til the end. When they get so old, things just wear out, like I seem to be doing, lol! I'm nearing 54 but feel like 90 some days.......

So far we have a garage kitty, house critters, and barn cats without a barn:) I have to add my "shop" kitty, a fellow who showed up last summer soooo sick, he barely weighed 4 pounds. Now he's tough to pick up. He's FIV positive, so he's in the shop by himself, which is attached to the garage. We have a small old woodstove in the shop, and this winter I've spent many a night, all night, running in and out to keep the woodstove stoked so Bill would stay warm enough. ( even though, growing up on a dairy farm, I knew he'd do all right without the man-made heat...)

My beloved diabetic kitty Peekaboo had eaten Hill's Science Diet for years, and we were always so happy with it. We really did consider it to be a "better" brand, and it's a little troubling to find out just how many brands are manufactured by just one company, and just how secretive the industry is regarding who really produces these products...

Our story: we ran out of the "good kitty stuff" two weeks ago and my elderly mother put out some higher-end dry dog food for Peekaboo after he had his insulin shot; she really believed that since he liked it, it wouldn't hurt him for a day until we went to the store. Within 24 hours, he was dead, and for no reason we could determine. He was fine that morning, all alert and happy, and that evening we found him under the porch in a natural sleeping position, dead (eight year old). Now Mother is racked with guilt because she is convinced that one day's worth of dog food killed her cat :( It was a Nutro product.

I don't know if it's the food's fault or not, but I'm not taking any chances. I spent this evening cooking dinner for four dogs. I didn't have any suitable meat or bones, but I do have back-yard eggs full of tasty omega-3s from my naturally fed chickens. I included a little rice and some greens, as well as ground up egg shells to add calcium. I'm just praying that I'll get the balance right; but there is no way that I'm going to take a chance on giving our babies any tainted products.

I am fairly certain that Menu Foods has had acceptable practices in the past, and I know that this is any company's worst nightmare, but the delay on releasing the information about which brands for which they contract is distressing. We needed this information YESTERDAY.

I know that so far they are only recalling wet products, but I keep thinking about how the last few recalls (peanut butter, beef) kept expanding to include all sorts of products and brands. Until they know what it was that killed these animals, I suppose I'll be cooking for four more people (dog people to be sure) at dinner...

LOL....Orphan Annie, queen of the garage, was left behind by the previous owner. (without informing us....a neighbor clued us in) She's a real sweetheart. All black and approximately 6 years old, now. She refuses to come in the house...and often leaves a dead mouse by my hubbys pick-up truck. He loves those early morning "gifts"! LOL

Orphan Annie- heh:) I should amend that Bill also has the run of the garage in warmer weather, as it's attached to the shop. I actually bought a little cat harness and leash and he will go out for walks! I won't let him wander anymore for his own sake and to protect other neighborhood cats. Don't know how old Bill is, but he's been around the block, for sure. After pumping him full of antibiotics and getting the works at the vets, his health seems stable. He WOULD come into the house if he could. He'd probably love Orphan Annie's company. He turned into a sweetie-pie, too, after I gained his trust.

Hmmmm...I didn't see that earlier. Have they updated the list?

I don't feed my dogs either of those foods. I hope that furbabies that may have gotten sick over this get better very soon. I would be lost without my dogs.

Thanks for the post and ping. It is times like these that I am glad I pay for and only use IAMS prescription only low residue dog food. The couple of bucks saved 4 times a year (big bag, little dog) wouldn't even cover a sick/poison doctor bill. IMO

I just read that Purina has opted to do a voluntary recall of some of their products. Because this is voluntary they are not on the Menu Foods or FDA list. They should be posting the items to be recalled on the Purina website shortly. There are several other brands opting for voluntary recall as well that aren't on the Menu Foods list either.

Purina has posted the following

Purina to voluntarily withdraw Mighty Dog® 5.3 ounce pouch products in response to Menu Foods recall
No other Purina products affected
St. Louis, Missouri, March 16, 2007
Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced that as a precautionary measure, it is voluntarily withdrawing its 5.3 ounce Mighty Dog® brand pouch products that were produced by Menu Foods, Inc. from December 3, 2006 through March 14, 2007. This withdrawal is in response to the recall initiated earlier today by Menu Foods, a contract manufacturer that does limited business with Purina as well as with other pet food manufacturers. Only Mighty Dog 5.3 ounce pouch products are being withdrawn by Nestlé Purina, including those pouches contained in multi-packs. Importantly, no Mighty Dog canned products, or any other Purina products are affected by Menu’s recall.

Hill's Science Diet; it's the best pet food made.

I've had the mother dog, the father dog, three litters totally 12 puppies, two cats, plus a new Shih Tzu and Yorkie that ALL eat SD and every single one of them lived at least 17 years! The mother dog lived to be 20 and was relatively healthy, except she was blind.

>>This recall only affects Science Diet Feline Savory Cuts canned products in the United States.

I feed him dry cat food but I give him a little of the canned dog food gravy and meat as a treat once a day.

I started last summer when he had an injury and lost a lot of weight, I mixed it in his dry food and he would eat.

That and the silver probably saved his life.

He doesn't really like the canned cat food except for one or two and then sometimes he doesn't like them either.
