Reel Celebrity of the Month

Alan Arkin was probably the biggest surprise on Oscar Night winning the Best Supporting Oscar for his portrayal of a cocaine using grandfather of the “Little Miss Sunshine” . He inconveniently dies as the very dysfunctional family is on the way to the big contest. The family is “running late” so just put him in the back … reminiscent of National Lampoons Vacation.. and they presses on to make the deadline in their clunker van.

He at 73 has had a long & varied career with movies that over the years have made us cry, chuckle & just roar out loud (well I did during the In-Laws(79). Here is some data on his life/career.

Professions:Actor, director, singer, composer, novelist, producer, vacuum cleaner repairman, clerical worker

Born: Brooklyn, New York on 3/26/1934

Sometimes Credited As:

Alan Wolf Arkin
Robert Short

Little Miss Sunshine
Reviewed by DollyCali

A three day road trip of a amusingly awkward & exceptionally dysfunctional family who nonetheless band together to support little Olive who has been chosen one of the finalists in the Little Miss Sunshine contest.. Olive is the youngest & the oldest is patriarch played by Alan Arkin who won an award for the role. The reason he is along on the trip is that he was just kicked out of his retirement home for snorting heroin..

This is a movie you will either love or hate. The rating should alert any who are sensitive that, even though a young girl is one of the stars and the Title sounds soooo innocent, an R rating is an R rating. !

The script is funny and it is well executed by the great cast. It was nominated for the Best Picture at this years Oscars and was a tremendous hit at the Sundance the year it was introduced.

Stars: Steve Carell, Greg Kinnear, Alan Arkin, Abigail Breslin, Paul Dano. Director: Johathan Dayton

Box Office (Feb28) -: $ 59,831,476

Breach

Reviewed by DollyCali

Universal Pictures released a critically acclaimed drama February 16. A dark visual tone pervades this film with a dark subject matter. All is not as it appears/seems is the bottom line. Not giving anything away as this is TRUE HISTORY - revealed in cinema that takes a bit of artistic license in presentation but not in bottom line.

A revered top flight FBI agent with decades of loyal service is KNOWN to be a traitor & agent for Russia. The theme of the movie is setting him up with a bright/fresh would-be agent (now clerk/go-fer assistant) & inform the FEDS on activities, in the hopes of getting his “agent” status solidified..

The clueless & not overly dedicated to this mission assistant is confused. This man., Robert Hannsen has a family, grandkids, is a super religious Catholic, going to mass daily, But he is told he is a traitor and to boot a sexual pervert along the way!

If one enjoys following the saga of interpersonal struggles & the confusion of life, you will relate well to this movie. It is tense & engaging & makes your heart sad as you see it unfold. The turncoat found out, stalked, apprehended, sentenced… makes you cheer & cry at the same time. What could have been had he NOT done these dastardly deeds.

The young not yet agent leaves the FBI after this case, the biggest espionage “catch” ever. He goes into private law practice in DC. Wonder if he is a FReeper/lurker? Come out, come out wherever you are!

This is rated PG13 for language, sexual situations & violence that might be offensive to some. It is 1 hour an 50 minutes in length.

Stars: Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillippe., Kathleen Quinlann; Laura Linney, Director and one of the three screenwriters: Billy Ray

Catch 22 (1970)
Reviewed by DollyCali

For this month’s classic review, I chose another Arkin movie. A screen adaptation of a book of the same name by Joseph Heller takes us to the Mediterranean during WW2. This military satire is brought to the screne by Mike Nicholas. In the film we find Yossarian (Alan Arkin) who was a bombardier and now desperately wants to get out of the military & so fakes insanity..

BUT, the catch 22 is that if he can understand his own mortality, then he is automatically considered sane. This does not sound funny but in the movie the characterization & playing out of the situation is enjoyable. Arkin is surrounded by a first class group of actors. In today’s economics, I don’t think such a production could come off unless the did an Ocean 11/12/13 arrangement.

Other Notes on the movie

The film is rated R and is just over 2 hours in length.

Theatrical release: June 24, 1970
DVD release: May 22, 2001

CATCH-22 was filmed on location in Italy and Mexico.

Martin Balsam replaced Stacy Keach in the role of Col. Cathcart over age concerns that Nichols had.

Second Unit Director John Jordan plummeted to his death during the film's production.

Stars: Alan Arkin; Orson Welles, Jon Voight, Martin Sheen, Bob Newhart, Richard Benjamil; Art Garfunkel; and Anthony Perkins

Box Office: Total US Gross $24,911,670 Rentals $12,250,000

My favorite movie of all time is Casablanca. But my pick for best movie of all time is Citizen Kane.

BTW, watch Kane sometime in proximity to Stagecoach and you'll see how much Orson Welles was influenced by John Ford.

Want me to put you down for April 1 next thread for To Kill a mockingbird, Citizen Kane, Casablanca???

Sure! Do you want something like a straight review? Because actually, I'd like to flesh out what I posted above -- adding more details on the movies, but with the underlying theme of why we're drawn to the heroes we are. But I can do it either way.

I look forward to your write-up of Mockingbird. Both the book and movie are favorites of mine.

The first time I read it, in ninth grade English, I had a teacher who required us to read a chapter a night, and gave us a brief quiz each day. I'm not a fan of that approach, but Mrs. Greiff was such a great teacher in every other way that it didn't bother me much.

The night I was supposed to read the chapter with the beginning of Tom Robinson's trial, I finished the book. I was definitely dragging the next day, but I just couldn't put it down.

Jaws
Reviewed by PCottraux (Philip Cottruax)

Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum.

I don’t think there’s a movie out there with more quotable lines, is more often quoted, or has a more recognizable theme than Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. The movie became engrained in our public conscience and is instantly recognizable as a pop culture icon, but it did much more than that; together with George Lucas’s Star Wars, it helped launch the modern era of film that we are still in—an era which shows no signs of slowing any time soon. Jaws brought the early ‘70s period of dark, gritty filmmaking, which included Chinatown and The Godfather, to an abrupt end. Before this film, the summertime was essentially a movie dumpster for forgotten B-pictures; after this film, it was the primary movie season.

Getting to the heart of the matter, however, it becomes clear that the acclamation is well-deserved. Jaws is simply a great film, with classic suspense and thrills topped off with an epic sea adventure reminiscent of Hemingway and Melville. Much is made of how much it terrified audiences, but the final act of the movie is as enthralling as it is scary, and the (literally) explosive climax ties up everything quite satisfyingly. Many peoples’ fear of water can probably be attributed to Jaws as well. Even as a 6 year-old boy, I recall going to the local YMCA for a swim to be a somewhat harrowing experience. The rec center had a gigantic indoor pool where the deep end reached 14 feet, and I rarely ventured away from the shallow end due to the certain promise that sharks had to be lurking somewhere in the blue murky depths of the other side of the pool.

Bridge to Terabithia
Reviewed by DollyCali

Walt Disney Pictures bring a delightfull tale to the screen. Bridge to Terabithia , a drama, is a faithful adaptation of a beloved children's novel and a powerful portrayal of love, loss, and imagination through children's eyes. The author is Katherine Paterson, whose son David co-wrote the screenplay and serves as a producer.

The story centers around a talented boy from a financially poor but loving and large Christian family who befriends a new girl who just moved into the property next to him. Her parents are authors & have financial comfort & Leslie is their only child, Both teens are somewhat outcasts & suffer the fate of many 8th grade children at the hands of cruel classmates. Their escape adventures in the back yard of mystery, wonder & joy will bring smiles & tears to you.

The audience when I attended was primarily adults, teens (dates) and a smattering of families/children.

The laughter from the children was fun to hear. .. The adults easily got into the story.. I personally was taken back to my years as a teen & the school “junk” as well as to the adventure and love of close friends. It will engage you as an adult as it amuses your children.

I think young children are fine with this movie. The death scene gives parents afterwards perhaps their first opportunity to discuss this topic with them. The little girl(younger sister of star) in the movie is charming & your little girls will LOVE HER!

As my son grew up every movie we went to was followed by dinner out & we talked about the movie. I asked him what his favorite parts were & why. What his WORSTEST parts were & why.. what made him happy & what made him sad. These are wonderful opportunities to share your values, get to know more of your child, & offer your strength as a parent with your children

The company that did the digital imaging (WETA) here is the same that did Lord of the Rings & King Kong. They are quite good & even people who dislike “special effect” movies, wont be too disturbed. The movie is filmed in New Zealand & the USA

This is rated PG for thematic images & the death of a young person..I don’t like to bring this as a spoiler but feel it is important that you know this befor taking young children. It is 1 hour an 50 minutes in length.

Stars: Josh Hutcherson..AnnaSophia Robb, Zooey Deschanel Director Gabor Csupo of the Rugrats fame

Stuck in a hotel over the C-PAC weekend, we saw "Pursuit of Happyness" and "Deja Vu." I recommend both. The former is one of those rare movies that does NOT trash business, but shows that the hero's desire to be a stockbroker never waned despite all sorts of bad luck and self-inflicted injuries. It's a true story, too.

"Deja Vu" has you guessing until the very end. I also saw "Night at the Museum." Not as funny as I expected.

BTW, there is something called the "Hollywood Prayer Network," run by Jennifer Dornbush. If Christian conservatives care about Hollywood, we need to do more than complain about movies. Pray. Get involved with HPN, and they will pair you up with a Hollywood writer, actor, producer, or set person---yes, a CHRISTIAN in Hollywood. These people need our support. I'm partnered with a screenwriter. Light a candle instead of cursing the darkness. Contact them at: hollywoodprayernetwork@fpch.org

John Inman

Most Recent Role: Teddy on Doctors
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Blackpool, England UK
Birthday: 6-28-1935
Birth Name: Frederick John Inman
Date of Death: 3-8-2007
Cause of Death: Hepatitis A infection

John Inman was just thirteen when he first appeared at the South Pier in Blackpool, his home town. Since then he has never looked back, with innumerable appearances on television, in cabaret and stage productions all over Britain and overseas and with starring roles in London's West End.

His West End debut came in the musical Ann Veronica at the Cambridge Theatre, followed by seventeen months at the famous Windmill Theatre after which John starred as Lord Fancourt Babberley in the production of Charley's Aunt at the Adelphi Theatre in the Strand.

However it was as Mr. Humphries in the long running BBC series Are You Being Served? that he became a household name throughout the country and world-wide. He was chosen to be the subject of This Is Your Life and was later honoured by the Variety Club of Great Britain as BBC television personality of the year. He was also voted funniest man on television by the readers of T.V. Times.

Summer seasons have also been an important element in John's varied career. His favorite show is pantomime, of which he has done over 40, and he is firmly recognised as the best dame in the business. He has appeared in six Royal Variety Performances, before most of the members of the Royal Family.

In spite of his world tours, he still returns home each christmas for his pantomime appearances. Are You Being Served? is shown on American television from coast to coast with huge success, which makes John a truly International star.

John works unceasingly for charity, he is past King Rat of the Grand Order of Water Rats, and the 2002 President of the Heritage Foundation.

John is very pleased to be appearing in Aladdin at the Theater Royal, Newcastle as this will be the first time he has done a pantomime north of Manchester, and Newcastle is one of his favorite places.

I did not see Deja Vu but will check it out..

Not heard of the Hollywood Prayer Network..

I will add your link to my master links each month in the body of thread. Thanks Larry.

Glad you got to go to CPAC. I hope to make it one year. Were you in the audience when Anne dropped the bombshell?

While in a nice motel last weekend I watched the following on PPV.

1. CASINO ROYALE..Seen it twice in the theaters last year, think it was the best film of 2006. Its coming out on DVD next tuesday, I encourage you to rent or buy it. An interesting and very cool take on James Bond.

2. Last King of Scotland. Forest Whittaker was great as Idi Amin, and it held my interest, which is more than I can say for most Academy Award films.
