Jaws Reviewed by PCottraux (Philip Cottruax)
Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum.
I dont think theres a movie out there with more quotable lines, is more often quoted, or has a more recognizable theme than Steven Spielbergs Jaws. The movie became engrained in our public conscience and is instantly recognizable as a pop culture icon, but it did much more than that; together with George Lucass Star Wars, it helped launch the modern era of film that we are still inan era which shows no signs of slowing any time soon. Jaws brought the early 70s period of dark, gritty filmmaking, which included Chinatown and The Godfather, to an abrupt end. Before this film, the summertime was essentially a movie dumpster for forgotten B-pictures; after this film, it was the primary movie season.
Getting to the heart of the matter, however, it becomes clear that the acclamation is well-deserved. Jaws is simply a great film, with classic suspense and thrills topped off with an epic sea adventure reminiscent of Hemingway and Melville. Much is made of how much it terrified audiences, but the final act of the movie is as enthralling as it is scary, and the (literally) explosive climax ties up everything quite satisfyingly. Many peoples fear of water can probably be attributed to Jaws as well. Even as a 6 year-old boy, I recall going to the local YMCA for a swim to be a somewhat harrowing experience. The rec center had a gigantic indoor pool where the deep end reached 14 feet, and I rarely ventured away from the shallow end due to the certain promise that sharks had to be lurking somewhere in the blue murky depths of the other side of the pool.

Bridge to Terabithia Reviewed by DollyCali
Walt Disney Pictures bring a delightfull tale to the screen. Bridge to Terabithia , a drama, is a faithful adaptation of a beloved children's novel and a powerful portrayal of love, loss, and imagination through children's eyes. The author is Katherine Paterson, whose son David co-wrote the screenplay and serves as a producer.
The story centers around a talented boy from a financially poor but loving and large Christian family who befriends a new girl who just moved into the property next to him. Her parents are authors & have financial comfort & Leslie is their only child, Both teens are somewhat outcasts & suffer the fate of many 8th grade children at the hands of cruel classmates. Their escape adventures in the back yard of mystery, wonder & joy will bring smiles & tears to you.
The audience when I attended was primarily adults, teens (dates) and a smattering of families/children.
The laughter from the children was fun to hear. .. The adults easily got into the story.. I personally was taken back to my years as a teen & the school junk as well as to the adventure and love of close friends. It will engage you as an adult as it amuses your children.
I think young children are fine with this movie. The death scene gives parents afterwards perhaps their first opportunity to discuss this topic with them. The little girl(younger sister of star) in the movie is charming & your little girls will LOVE HER!
As my son grew up every movie we went to was followed by dinner out & we talked about the movie. I asked him what his favorite parts were & why. What his WORSTEST parts were & why.. what made him happy & what made him sad. These are wonderful opportunities to share your values, get to know more of your child, & offer your strength as a parent with your children
The company that did the digital imaging (WETA) here is the same that did Lord of the Rings & King Kong. They are quite good & even people who dislike special effect movies, wont be too disturbed. The movie is filmed in New Zealand & the USA
This is rated PG for thematic images & the death of a young person..I dont like to bring this as a spoiler but feel it is important that you know this befor taking young children. It is 1 hour an 50 minutes in length.
