The title about says it all, but not quite. There seems to be about 10 trillion books about Jefferson out there, most of which are pretty fawning, IMHO. What I am looking for is a book that explores Jefferson in his later, post-Dec. of Indep. years, i.e. as govenor of VA, his administration as POTUS, etc.*
Thanks in advance.
(*If it's of any importance I have Forrest McDonald's book The Presidency of Thomas Jefferson, a book I can't recommend highly enough.)
ping for your insight
Setting the "World Ablaze" by John Ferling is an interesting book that isn't "fawning". It tells the darker side of Jefferson and gives references as to where his letters are to be found. The book also covers Washington and Adams.
Forrest McDonald has a great sense of humor in a subtle sort of way and he likes to cut back against the grain. The DNA "evidence" he argued did not indict Jefferson and points instead to the wayward kin.
I am NO fan of Jefferson, be advised. Here's a few:
Affairs of Honor: National Politics in the New Republic (Paperback)
by Joanne B. Freeman "When the American republic sprang to life in the spring of 1789, many were disappointed..." (more)
Key Phrases: New York, Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson
Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation (Paperback)
by Joseph J. Ellis

O, neither am I! I tell you, the more I learn about this man...
I remember that insight by Forrest McDonald who said (in effect) that today's image of Thomas Jefferson was born and carefully nurtured during, and for, the FDR administration. So much so that today's version of Jefferson would be "unknowable" to those who knew the real Jefferson. IMHO, he is a liberal icon, par excellence
"post-Dec. of Indep. years, i.e. as govenor of VA"
LOL THAT'S something they don't like to discuss. Mr. Coward, etc. Shocked he sent out MIL to shut down the Barbary terrorists. But then, that wasn't his butt on the line, unlike during the RevWar.
Jefferson wasn't terrible but he wasn't as great as made out to be.
Yep...you got it. I heard Joanne Freeman, Prof at Yale, speak at the RevWar Round Table in NYC a few years back. She does not like TJ at ALL following her extensive research about the man.
