It's quotes weekend! What are your favorite quotes? Some of my favorites:
"I see America, not in the setting sun of a black night of despair ahead of us, I see America in the crimson light of a rising sun fresh from the burning, creative hand of God. I see great days ahead, great days possible to men and women of will and vision." --Carl Sandburg
"It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them." --Mark Twain
"Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love." --Jane Austen
Nah...
No, really, Bill and I are just hanging out--we didn't see anything...
You guys just go right ahead...nobody noticed nuthin'
snugs,
Is that what we call a "pound cake"? yum-yum, pound cake!
Lol yeah I bet you are.
This reminds me of a story. ("OH NO!!!" they all think.)
Early in my time online, I had met some woman in a chat room. To be honest, she didn't impress me, but I was new at the web and happy to have any woman paying attention to me. We went to a private room or maybe just used instant messages. I forget exactly how we got to this point, but she wanted to engage in some kind of cyber date or outing together.
I wasn't quite sure what to do, but I decided to talk about the last vacation I had taken but just to insert her into the story. I was talking about my trip to the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. I talked about driving through the park and seeing the great rock formations along the way. I talked about the beautiful, clear, blue sky and the crisp fall air. I talked about the Little Missouri River and the cottonwoods that were golden yellow in their fall colors. I did the whole "Okay, here we are. Are you ready to take a little hike? What kind of granola bars do you want, maple and brown sugar or oats and honey? Nah, I've got the pack. How about you just take these binoculars?"
She was playing along, and I was feeling pretty good about how I was doing. Then she typed, "This stuff is really great. Are you reading it from a book or something?" I just typed "Excuse me?" She said, "Where are you getting all of this?" I told her that it wasn't from a book or anything but was my description of my last vacation except with her included. The hiking trip ended pretty quickly.
I guess I'm the only one WHO IS NOT WATCHING...
Not watching what? :P
Here is another traditional English cake which from what I have been told is rather different to your coconut cake. We do not ice or frost ours.
Coconut Cake
Fat for greasing
4 cups flour
pinch salt
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup marg
1 cup fine granulated sugar
5/8 cup desiccated coconut
4 eggs
a little milk to mix
5/8 cup coconut strands (optional I do not use)
Preheat oven 350F. Grease deep 7 inch cake tin (pan) and line with greaseproof (parchment) paper and grease again.
Sieve the flour salt and baking powder in to a bowl and rub in the marg. Stir in the sugar and desiccated coconut.
Beat the eggs lightly and stir into the mixture with enough milk to form a fairly stiff dropping consistency.
Pour the mixture into the prepared tin (pan and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours until well risen and firm to the touch. Turn on to a wire rack to cool
If desired sprinkle cake with coconut strands.
Serves 8 - 10
Wonder why the lady, who loved your storytelling when she thought it was "made-up" couldn't deal with the truth and, I thought, the clever way you included her in the "story"?
You captured it very well with the "serious in a ridiculous way" description. It's a nice quote, but it becomes ridiculous if a pompous professor inflicts it on a class full of students too many times.
I knew I needed a better telescope.
(I'm just funning with you...)
You would have thought she would have been even more impressed that you were not making it up.
On the other hand maybe she was not into hiking or nature trips, theory book ones OK but not for real.
Thanks for the description. The cake sounds great, but I probably wouldn't enjoy it until I knew whether my system would handle carroway seeds. Your picture of it looks very good.
Lol maybe if you're a good boy, krunkygirl will buy you one for your birthday.
One more recipe for you and then I think I had better turn in.
Almond Cake
1 cup marg
1 cup fine granulated sugar
4 eggs
Few drops vanilla or almond essence
1 5/8 cups flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
2/3 cup ground almonds
Flaked almonds to decorate
Preheat over to 350F
Cream fat and sugar then beat in the eggs and essence. Sieve the flour and baking powder and fold into the mixture with the ground almonds.
Turn the mixture into a greased and lined deep 7 inch cake tin (pan) and sprinkle with the flaked almonds. Bake for about 1 ¾ hours. Cool on a wire rack.
Serves 6 8
Night all see you tomorrow
Well, we're not doing anything...here... :P
Good night, snugs.
...then, of course, I realized you were talking about one of your snakes--;)
