WORD FOR THE DAY, TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2007, VULNERABLE
Merriam-Webster | 1/19/07 | Slip 18

Tuesday, January 16, 2007, Tuesday, VULNERABLE

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today. Tomorrow I’m bringing in chains, so beware.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

VULNERABLE

Pronunciation: ‘vul/ner/a/’bal (I think)
Function: adjective
Etymology: Late Latin vulnerabilis, from Latin vulnerare to wound, from vulner-, vulnus wound; probably akin to Latin vellere to pluck, Greek oulE wound

1 : capable of being physically or emotionally wounded
2 : open to attack or damage : ASSAILABLE (vulnerable to criticism)
3 : liable to increased penalties but entitled to increased bonuses after winning a game in contract bridge

You may use all the “vulnerables” you choose, such as “invulnerable,” invulnerabless,” you know, those kinds of words, and you will get a grade.

I have a Band-Aide on my right index finger, so please forgive me if I give you a rotten grade.

33 degrees and drizzling here. We are expecting ice and possibly even a bit of snow overnight. They closed the Interstate west of here earlier today.

Well our normal winters are great. We average about 70 degrees in the winter and it is wonderful, but summer is brutal.

But there are areas of Texas that get hit pretty hard during winter - the High Plains, the Panhandle and all across north Texas. T5 is west of San Antonio so the elevation starts to climb a bit there heading toward the High Plains..... you can't imagine how fast a cold front can blow in from the Rockies in that part of Texas. I've seen the temps drop 40 or more degrees in a matter of hours.

It's taken some time, but I've gotten used to the wacky weather of DelMarVa, I think I'll stick with it - at least for now :)

It is 26 this morning and about an inch of snow and sleet on the ground, and SA is still pretty much shut down till at least noon-IH 10 is mostly closed all the way to Junction. We're supposed to begin thawing out today, but I think it will be well after noon before anyone in this neighborhood will be able to get down the hill to the main road.

We lost power at about midnight when a big tree limb broke under the load of snow and ice on it and downed a main power line just up the road. I woke up when I realized it was too quiet and dark, lit a couple of candles and called the power coop's emergency number, but the outtage had already been reported and a repair crew was on the way-power came back on at 3, and the house is finally getting warmed up again.

It's 26 here, but it's so dry that there was absolutely no frost on the car windows.

I saw on the SA newspaper's website that the baby whose mother "lost" him near Houston was found in California, and that the mother had "given" him to a couple from there at a truck stop. I still say she sold her baby to the couple and met them there to complete the transaction, but of course nobody is going to admit to buying or selling a baby. The mother had even given temporary custody to a friend because she couldn't take care of the baby, then she went with her boyfriend to the friend's home and asked to take the baby out for awhile. Next thing you know, the kid is in California-the whole thing smells rotten to me...

Our cars and the next door neighbor's are so covered with ice and snow that you can barely tell what kind of cars they are.

Don't ya just hate when that happens?

I'll still have to go out in a little while to warm mine up, once it gets going it's great - but she's slow on the uptake getting warm air out of the heater :)

wow, you guys have winter! it is def cold today, was 24 degrees on the way in. xsboy has a formal dress day today and only had on his navy blazer bc he doesn't have a coat that will go over it. he finally acquiesced to owning a ski type jacket, something he has NEVER owned, and so we will stop this afternoon and get one after i pick him up from the subway. it truly hasn't been an issue yet this winter, but this friday they have an away game out in Easton MD, Gabz' neck of the woods eastern shore area, and they have to dress up in tie and jacket on game days, and i want him wearing something warm!

BTW - you're right about winter coats not really being an issue so far this winter. And dingbat me obviously wasn't thinking when i took the girls to school, after I dropped them off I went to the supermarket.....but I didn't put a coat on. The wind was down right cold walking across the store parking lot. Brrrrrrr. A sweatshirt over a T-shirt was not exactly proper attire for being outside this morning :)

i hate driving in a coat so i usually try to get by with heavy sweaters if i am going shopping or something, and don't have to spend a lot of time outside. but i wore my new winter coat this AM and was happy i did.

I don't like driving with a coat either, so I will normally wear a denim or leather jacket and more often than not will even just toss that on the seat until I have to get out.

We had a dusting of snow overnight and it is still snowing. My commute, that normally takes 45 minutes, took about 2 hours. I'm getting the new classroom ready.
