Van Halen, Grandmaster Flash, R.E.M., Ronettes and Patti Smith make Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
CLEVELAND Van Halen made a "jump" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes and Patti Smith. A panel of 600 industry experts selected the five artists to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 12 in New York.
Van Halen was the 1980s hard rock quartet led by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, outrageous lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and later rocker Sammy Hagar, that put out hits such as "Jump" and "Dreams."
R.E.M. was the quintessential indie rock band until breaking through to mass success in the early 1990s with songs like "Losing My Religion."
Grandmaster Flash led the most innovative act in early hip-hop, and the song "The Message" was like a letter from urban America.
Punk rock poet Patti Smith and Phil Spector favorites the Ronettes round out the 2007 class.
To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.
I've repeatedly heard and/or read two completely different accounts of that tour. One version is the above; the other is the opposite scenario. Not surprising, given the way the fans tend to polarize over that issue. I thought it was a ballsy thing for the two of them to do, knowing that on average, half of the audience would be there mostly to see the other guy. I respected them both a bit more for making the effort.
Eddie Van Halen, on the other hand, recently lended his guitar talents to the soundtrack of a porn flick. There are clips on YouTube.
And who did Randy California play with when he was 17 while he was in NYC that gave him the name, Randy California?
Roth and Hagar are both well received by this ear. I've always hated the effing debate.
How the mighty have fallen.
Terry Kath is probably the most underrated guitarist of all time. He was ahead of his time. And a killer voice to boot
I rememeber that he was really disappointed. Or maybe disillusioned would be a better term. He had never seen Roth with Van Halen and was really looking forward to the live show.
Are they really touring with DLR? That should be fun, even if they are geezers.
I think it took Sammy a while to figure that out.
"I wonder if there'll ever be any move to put the Replacements in. That was a great, great band that never got the recognition they deserved."
Amen. Truly one of the greatest.
Pretty much sums it up.
Word in Ann Arbor from their manager was that they were in.. Very disappointing and confusing. By the way, they've re-united with Iggy and have been touring lately.
Ab so lute ly.
Ever really listen to the Carnegie (album IV) version of "It Better End Soon"? Just pick out the guitar work. The word "virtuoso" was invented for that kind of performance. While he's singing, Kath builds this incredible tension in the background -- it's amazing.
I've never put on a tagline before, but now you've inspired me. Westerberg could probably give us 100.
The saddest thing of all was when he performed the bluegrass version of Jump, and looked so insanely happy just to be on stage. That's on YouTube as well... and it's just cringe-inducing. Though I'll admit, hearing a banjo player rip through an Eddie Van Halen solo was quite entertaining - in a completely surreal sort of way.
Big Spirit fan here ... their debut album is one of the most beautiful that ever came from any band.
So ... who did Randy C play with in NYC? The Underground?
I've read that Jimmy Page first heard his Stairway riff in Spirit's 'Taurus' and then made it his own.
Van Halen? I guess I'm getting old. I saw their inaugural tour back in 1978 I think. They were the opening act for Journey, and they pretty much rocked the house.
"When is Cheap Trick going to be inducted?"
I was kissed by Robin Zander when I was a young girl (16) and they were basically just a "garage band" doing tours of High Schools. *SIGH* It was my claim to fame in school until a classmate got a kiss from Elvis, that b*tch, LOL! (My "coolness quotient" rapidly fell after that...)
But I still love Cheap Trick! :)
(And I'm THRILLED to see Van Halen included.)
"I've never put on a tagline before, but now you've inspired me. Westerberg could probably give us 100."
Damned if you didn't choose one of the best. :)
