Time for a new Free Republic Folding@home thread.
Our Free Republic team of 416 members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 57th place (with 1,032 active CPUs - 92,150 completed Work Units and 18.0 million points).
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 20+ folding threads)

Next box.
For now, I've got both of the machines under my governance running pedal to the metal 24/7/365; just posted my second highest single day number, and jumped into 87th position.

LOL!
No teams, no competition. No competition and our philathropy of GFLOPS becomes, somehow, less engaging; more mundane. Pedestrian, even.
There MUST be teams; for nothing promotes more philanthropy like introducing competition among the philanthropists.

I still have six machines folding but my daily average has slipped to just under 500 points a day. Are there any tips for getting bigger numbers with fewer machines?

I still have six machines folding but my daily average has slipped to just under 500 points a day. Are there any tips for getting bigger numbers with fewer machines? It's these dang p212x and p1496 WUs! They're not worth that many points, but they take forever to complete. As someone else pointed out, though, it appears we're all being slowed down at the same rate.
Other than my brother's two new Macs that are being assigned the new SMP WUs, I can't really give you any tips. I could shut down my other 11 machines, and his two would carry my load quite nicely.

Without checking, let guess: one of those is that infernal 5way_melt work unit, right?

I think we're in what ancient mariners would refer to as "the duldrums".

Okay, I just completed a work unit for *9* whole points.
What's going on here? Is someone at Stanford punking us? ;-)

I am zooming up the charts now, #86.
Happy with new dual core processor for folding.
Not doing badly for having just one box.

I'd like to thank the Academy-- my parents, for always telling me.... stuff. My brother for borging two Macs...

One of the work units has a habit of Early Unit Ending at exactly that same spot. They will be reworking the code, once they figure out why this one WU has problems.
I had one EUE fairly fast last week. Brought my daily average up for that system. I think I earned a few points for about an hours work - nut it counted as nearly 200 ppd.

Thanks to both of you for being such a big part of the FReeper Folding team.
Quietly, quietly, you keep adding points to the cause of research.
Papasmurf, any update on Dylan or Smile?
Just a public Thank You for your contributions. Please ping us if you have any questions.

Don't know whether any of you can confirm this, but...
I'd had occasional problems where FAH would complete a unit and upload it, then be unable to connect to the Assignment server for download of new work. An FAH forum entry suggested that this could be rectified by switching the "Use Internet Explorer settings" to "no".
That tweak has cured the access problem I was having, but it appears to have had the derivative benefit of increasing my daily production; my recent ppd appear higher than before. I changed the setting on my office box about a week ago (1/11), but didn't change the setting on my home PC until early this week (1/15).
Here are my most recent daily numbers and three-day moving averages of those numbers:
DATE PPD 3DA
01/11 94 -
01/12 0 -
01/13 392 162
01/14 198 197
01/15 180 257
01/16 669 349
01/17 72 307
01/18 237 326
What say ye? Anyone else notice a similar effect?

I think that it may be a statistical abberation, with two large work units popping the same day. Look at it over another week and if it stays high, then there may be a correlation.
Still, the IE settings should be set to "No" for almost everyone. Especially IE7 users.
If anything, I bet there is a relationship between your points credited and the ability of the client to access Stanford's servers for intermediate checkpoints.

Thanks for the ping, and reminder, Texas Booster.
I sent SMILE a message and asked her how things are. Also, if she wouldn't mind, I asked if she would just post it on our trucking board for all, and I would post it here for her.
So here is her post...

Most of ya know my lil boy Dylan has been battling cancer since he was 2yrs old..rhabdomyosarcoma (soft tissue cancer)
well he just turned 10 on Jan 8th.... which we spent his birthday in the hospital.. we was in there until the 14th.....
he had a bacterial infection .. there is still something going on with his colon... still on meds now..
i was also admitted to the hospital on jan 10 thru jan 14th... i had bronchitis really bad...i'm feelin much better...
Dylan seen the GI dr on the 17th.. they have referred him to INDIANAPOLIS to ST Vincents hospital..... that is where he went through all of his chemotherapy/radiation and all the surgeries he has been through..
i received the call yesterday on his appointment. it is scheduled for FEB 19th.. they are suppose to run some test on him.. One test will be the colonoscopy.. the Dr's here would not do it afraid they would punture his colon with that being the area he had treatment on and all the scar tissue and with his age and weight.. he weighs between 51and 58 lbs..
i know it seems we are in the hospital about every 3 months for a week at a time ... so i am truly hoping that we can find out what is wrong with him.. he misses going to school so much.. we are doing home studies now.. but it is not like seeing his friends.. ( I think he get's bored with me)..lol
he is doing very well with all of his studies though .. smart as a tack.
he is such a sweet soul always helping others and so considerate of others feelings.. he truly amazes me..
i know some of you are praying for us i truly appreciate that more than words can say.. you all are such good hearts. i thank you for the concern and love you show.
i don't know how long we will be in INDY.. I know me and his dad are both gonna be off work for this trip... usually it is just me.. cause it has been local hospitals... just hope things go well.. i know bubby has really been down in the dumps lately he misses his buddies .. he worries to much about us i think.. ii tell him things are just fine.. GOD will not let us suffer and he loves us so things are fine..GOD knows what he is doing..
i posted on the other thread if anyone wanted to send him a get well card/ cheer up card.. they could...he received some the kids at school made him.. he smiled and says i will cherish them forever....some of them cars were so cute... the word and phrases third graders used was priceless..
kids are so amazing.. i know my daughter Jessica is having a difficult time with this also.. she is developmentally delayed and does not understand why we are back and forth to hospitals and she stays at granny's.. she is 14.. but it has been rough on her.. and as a mother it is very hard on me....... i feel like i need to be at two places at the same time.... but our Lord is getting us through it..
but like i said i truly appreciate each and everyone of you with the thoughts and prayers.. God Bless All..
I can't even imagine what she, and Dylan, are going through. I can only keep Praying and folding.
Thanks for your kindness all, and especially Texas Booster.
:O)

Thanks for the update, papasmurf.
Folks, that is why we fold, why we spend extra money on electricity and why we spend so much money upgrading our computers to be faster.
(Well, truth be told, maybe there is a little competitive spirit in the upgrades).
Let Smile know that we remember her and Dylan in our prayers.
Blessings to you and yours!
