Some of you may have purchased HDTV's over the Christmas break.
Please share your comments on your quest for HDTV.
I use HDMI from my satelite receiver to my TV but the optical from satelite to surround sound receiver...so I think I've got about as few cables as possible that way. My best bet to cut it down is to do HDMI from DVD to TV...good excuse to get a HD-DVD player some day. I don't route any sound through the TV.
If you had HDMI on a stereo receiver as well as your TV and device, we're talking two cords instead of four.
One HDMI from the TV to the device and one from the device to the receiver.
My surround sound receiver (Yamaha 5930)doesn't have HDMI inputs (only digital and optical, along with the plethora of component and multi-channel). Among the three pieces (satelite box, receiver and TV) I am working on only two cords (one from the satelite to each of the others). It's my DVD/Super Audio CD that's adding to the bulk (along with the six sets of speaker wire cords from receiver to the wall jacks). If someone ever creates a wall plug to make all six speakers work off of one connector cord and plug from the receiver, they'll make a mint.
in re: speakers.... think wireless for the future
Please put me on your ping list, this is the second year in a row I chickened out of buying one.
I've enjoyed it more than I imagined, and have become someone who likes to hang around the TV department of Best Buy. I haven't gotten around to upgrading, though I've had a few good talks with the local Best Buy (I must have a really good local Best Buy--I've talked to so many Freepers who dislike theirs) about what I can really expect. I can buy a little <$200 rig that'll make my present movie enjoyment better. I'm not a sports watcher, so much of the HDTV anticipation is not for me. I like watching rented DVDs. But to get HDTV all-around would cost a monthly payment through my DirectTV, and I really don't care to do that.
How does this rig I mentioned help with the movie DVDs? I'm told the same DVDs that I already own will look better. Don't quite understand that. Wouldn't the DVDs have to be on a new format?
yes give it a bump,love that site,gotta teach tourself..it's great!!!!!Yep AVS bump..
Wow you got FIOS!!!!!!!!I am waiting,so Ican take down my dish from the tree and then buy HDTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You lucky dog!!!!
The difference in a 1080i compatible and 1080p fixed pixel display is nearly 300 lines. A non-1080p fixed pixel must somehow fit a 1080i picture into its native 720 or 768 vertical lines. Not sure how the down-conversion is done. Seems to me a 1080p lcd would look better with a 1080i source than with a 720p source. Not sure, don't own either, yet.
Good luck!
I bought a Toshiba DVD upconverter less than two years ago, it is now in the box in my trunk going back to COSTCO!
As I was setting the thing up today I felt a trickle shock from the case.
(Let's see if their satisfaction guarantee works.)
Here's the problem I see with wall mounting:
WHERE DO YOU PUT ALL THE CABLES AND COMPONENTS? Unless you do nothing but watch boxless cable or OTA off an antenna, you still need SOMEWHERE to put all the cables. Unless you want to take the time to develop a convoluted system of running all the stuff through the wall to a cabinet in another part of the room, where to you put it all?
With the latest flat panels, when you have a wall mount, all you need is power and one additional DVI cable. Sure if you have multiple inputs/outputs it gets more complicated. Yes, you do have to cut holes in the wall. I just wall mounted a 27" LCD in the kitchen/eat-in dining area and with interior walls it's pretty easy if you're a DIY type.

Pinging the HDTV list..
Interested in HDTV?
Please Freepmail (works best) me if you would like your name added to the HDTV ping list. The pinged subjects will be those of HDTV technology, satellite/cable HD, OTA (over the air with various roof top and indoor antennas) HD reception. Broadcast specials, Blu-ray/HD-DVD, and any and all subjects relating to HD.

Got a Sanyo 32” LCD. Looks really good. I also bought a Samsung 5.1 surround sound home theater system, so my living room is pretty awesome at the moment.
Got our second Sony HD set over Christmas to replace an old RCA upstairs. The new Bravia (about 26”) works well with the over-the-air HD broadcasts. Unlike our two year old set, it has the tuner built in. Sure wish we could buy an American brand. I really hate spending money on Japanese stuff.
I wish folks would quit relying on CR for high tech gear!
Use CNET.com
These folks have the labs, experience, and equipment to properly compare the high tech gear.
My wife keeps “hinting” for a new Flat Screen TV, but she wants a size equal to our present Toshiba 52” rear screen projection type. From what I see out there, one of that size would be close to 3 grand...............any suggestions?....
