This article is getting a lot of press out on the net. I find it a little embarrassing that this is being presented and interpreted as a conservative view of the matter. A eat a lot of Soy products for health reasons.

Does this article represent the general conservative view? I know that eating soy = not some sort of tree hugger mentality around here, but it's just a food product - now it's making people gay? This is truly laughable and conservatives are being laughed at because of it.

By the way, the conservative view of being gay is that it's wired that way from birth, correct? It's acting out that gayness that is a huge problem and a choice, right? It has nothing to do with food intake, right?

Uh, no, that's the liberal view. We believe that homosexuality is a choice, a lack of moral fortitude.

Besides, homosexuality would have to pass on the gene if it were a gene, and gays don't reproduce.

Too much soy is also known to supress thyroid function. I think a little soy in the diet is probably healthy, because is is low-fat protien. But, like everything else, it should be taken in moderation.

As a man who ingests a lot of soy products, I am not concerned about this in the least. In fact, I am more than happy with my new breasts. They're very perky!

Overall, this article is a load of crap. The author's interpretation of basic endocrinological data is simply wrong.

Perinatal testosterone masculinizes.
Perinatal estrogen, contrary to conventional (but erroneous) wisdom, also masculinizes.
Adult administration of estrogen to normal males, in large doses, can feminize certain structures, e.g., gynecomastia.
Adult administration of estrogen to normal males does not feminize behavior.

Does this article represent the general conservative view?

A lot of conservatives long for "the good old days" when "men were men and women were in the kitchen getting them dinner and a beer".

So yes, conservatives are looking for some way to turn back the clock. Unfortuneately for them, banning soy is not going to do it.

Technology has made it more important to be smart and patient, than strong and manly. What that means, women are getting to be more and more equal in most aspects of society.

There is research that processed soy leads to mental degeneration.

That wouldn't correspond to moral degeneration but is certainly more credible than claiming that someone is a crossdresser by getting the "wear the member of the opposite sex's clothes" gene. We are born naked. Clothes are fashion dictated by culture.

Soybean products are feminizing, and they're all over the place

I guess the Soy & Rice based diet neatly explains the Japanese actions of WWII then. It was nothing more that diet induced PMS!!!

Does this article represent the general conservative view?

Evidently you're one of those people who think science is a political tool rather than a discipline based upon empirical observation. You probably also believe that we know everything about global climate and can control it by changing human behavior.

The empirical fact is that soy contains estrogen analogs..

http://www.mothering.com/articles/growing_child/food/soy_story.html

Male infants experience a testosterone surge during the first few months of life and produce androgens in amounts equal to those of adult men. So much testosterone at such a tender age is needed to program the body for puberty, the time when a male's sex organs should develop and he should begin to express male characteristics such as facial and pubic hair and a deep voice. If receptor sites intended for the hormone testosterone are occupied by soy estrogens, however, appropriate development may never take place.71-74 To date, most of the evidence damning soy formula can be found only in animal studies, because investigations in which humans' sex hormone levels are lowered experimentally cannot ethically be done. However, in the years since soy formula has been in the marketplace, parents and pediatricians have reported growing numbers of boys whose physical maturation is either delayed or does not occur at all. Breasts, underdeveloped gonads, undescended testicles (cryptorchidism), and steroid insufficiencies are increasingly common. Sperm counts are also falling.75-79

Soy formula is bad news for girls as well. Natural estrogen levels approximately double during the first month of life, then decline and remain at low levels until puberty. With increased estrogens in the environment in the diet, an alarming number of girls are entering puberty much earlier than normal.80-82 One percent of girls now show signs of puberty, such as breast development or pubic hair, before the age of three. By the age of eight, 14.7 percent of Caucasian girls and 48.3 percent of African American girls had one or both of these characteristics.83 The fact that blacks experience earlier puberties than whites is not a racial difference but a recent phenomenon.84, 85
