...With a record of 2-11, the silver-and-Honolulu blue are firmly entrenched at No. 32 on any power poll in this spiral arm of the galaxy. Entrenched, that is, until another loss drops them behind Ohio State, Florida and the Hamburg Sea Devils. Think it can't get worse? Hey, this is the Lions. NFL schedule makers saw fit to arrange the endgame Kitty Cats' so, so long season likewise: at the Green Bay Packers where the Lions haven't won since a guy named Brett Favre took over there (that's right, 1992); against the Chicago Bears in a game which figures to see Motor City backers immortalize the chant "Fire *&#!!%&ing Millen!"; and at the Dallas Cowboys , who on New Year's Eve will probably looking to bag the No. 2 seed in the NFC... Kevin Jones, who was knocked out of the loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, figures to be out for the remainder of the season... Pro Bowl nominee Shaun Rogers... was slapped by the commissioner after testing positive for steroids. The judgment had Rogers forcibly sitting out four games and giving up $250,000. Naturally, "Big Baby" was innocent, protesting that the positive test represented a product that the 354-pound Rogers used to help him control his weight. Or he has asthma. Or he thought they were Shawne Merriman's Pez. Or something... Team officials announced yesterday that WR Mike Williams - you remember him: the former first-round draft pick cum The Most Useless Player in the NFL Today - flunked a weigh-in. At 240 pounds, Williams only missed the target set by Rod Marinelli and Co. by 20. Though no punitive measures have been mentioned, any punishment would seem pointless other then some quality time on the bench... Fire &#!!%&ing Millen.

deetroit hasn’t been the same since Lem Barney played for them.
The Lions last decent quarterback was Bobby Layne, and that was before I was even born.
(Although I did have a poster of Greg Landry when I was a kid).
The Lions just plain suck. They are perhaps the worst franchise in professional sports since the 1962 New York Mets. I can’t imagine what it would be like to root for that team over the last say...30 years.
How The Lions Were Built
'Survivor,' Detroit Lions editionEveryone knows Rod Marinelli is gone as Detroit Lions coach next week. The only question is, will he outlast the newspaper columnist who has been leading the charge for his ouster?

San Jose Mercury News
After Detroit dropped to 0-15 Sunday, Rob Parker of the Detroit News took issue, as always, with the continued presence of defensive coordinator Joe Barry, Marinelli's son-in-law. When the coach didn't take the bait on repeated questions, Parker asked: "On a lighter note, do you wish your daughter would have married a better defensive coordinator?"
Marinelli restrained himself, looking away and moving to the next question without a response. But the guys on Fox's national postgame show blasted Parker, as did just about everyone else in America. In his column Monday, Parker said he and Marinelli have a good relationship based on "mutual respect." He allowed, "My attempt at humor may have seemed slighted, cruel, and even insensitive. For that, I apologize."
Marinelli wasn't having any of an apology. "I didn't read it, I was just told a little bit about it, and I don't accept anything," he said. He added that he was particularly upset that it would happen in a "room of stink." Whatever that is, it's a term that should be used more often.
The News (which, like the Mercury News, is owned by MediaNews Group) posted a follow-up article on its Web with managing editor Don Nauss saying Parker's question was inappropriate. "The News is taking this matter seriously and will deal with it promptly in an appropriate manner," Nauss said.
When I set up that schedule/score table back in September, I coded it for 16 losses. I’d forgotten that part. Anyway, regarding Lane Kiffin:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Kiffin
His son Lane Kiffin was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 2007-2008, and was recently named the head coach at University of Tennessee. Monte Kiffin told his team on Wednesday December 10th that this would be his last season with the Buccaneers. Kiffin will join his son Lane and work as the Defensive Coordinator at the University of Tennessee.
Off topic, maybe, but I'd like to wish all of my fellow Michiganders and Michiganians a very Merry Christmas!
“Fire &#!!%&ing Millen.”
How do you fire a disinterested owner? The Ford family must go!
That is an entire magnitude larger than "OUCH"! Think Parker might be able to hammer the Ford family interest?
My favorite is Barry Sanders’ remark when he decided to retire after the Puddy-Tats drafted Aaron Gibson as Barry’s “protection”.
Gibson shows up to training camp pushing 385 pounds (really, circa 400!). Barry, in his infinite wisdom intones on a live WDIV interview, “No human being gets to 400 pounds from lifting weights.”
The writing was on the wall. 2 weeks into camp...Barry retires.
It was pretty mean, but I laughed my head off, and to put it in perspective, at least Parker made his nasty joke right to his victim’s face — unlike the losers on SNL, Daily Show, the View, and various other partisan shilling shows.
There’s an op-ed that makes that same statement — but of course the writer sez, the nation has elected its first black president, so...
It’s Ford’s team. It has sucked continually since his dad bought it, having won only one playoff game in that stretch (and in my lifetime). We may not like it, but as Little Richard said about hardcore rap CDs, “I don’t got to buy it.”
Thanks grellis, Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Full Disclosure: I pull for the Pu$$ies every weekend! I really want them to win...somthing...sometime.
My “slave” is that winning in the NFL follows a “swelling curve”. Teams peak and then die-off. The Lions time will come.
I pray that, that time will come before the Lord calls me home(and after He explicates the Ford family from the Lion decision tree!).
I’m at peace..I think...maybe...pour me another bourbon...
How many of us still here the announcer, “He pushed it right! It’s wide right!”
Eddie “Automatic” Murray from inside 40 yards...just...wasn’t!
I almost drove off the road in snowy Wyoming.
Thanks for the pings!
Merry Christmas!
Okay, DON’T pour me another bourbon!
2 Corrections.
Post 137: “slave” should be “salve”.
Post 138: “here” should be “hear”.
