The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

What's the current rate for a standard letter these days? Thirty nine cents?

Thanks!

Guess I could have poked around the USPS website until I figgered it out. Lazy me...

Have you ever tried making candy with those candy melts and plastic molds? You melt the candy in a double boiler, or if you don't have one, put the candy in a dry pan, over another, slightly larger pan with a little bit of water. Bring the water almost to a boil, then turn the heat down. Stir the candy wafers, and when it's all melted, spoon it into the molds. If you have a Michaels, AC Moore, Hobby Lobby, or a party store, you're likely to find this stuff.

We're trying to hold down costs this Christmas ourselves, and one of the things I'm going to do for the kids is make them some of their favorite candies. I'm going to make SirKit some Turtles. I got some caramel from the cake crafts store, as well as some dark chocolate melts. My sister had given me a bag of pecans when we were in MS, so I'm going to work some pecans into the caramel, then dip it in the melted chocolate. Then, I'll put it in the refrig, or the freezer, to give the chocolate time to harden. VIOLA! Turtles!

David was lamenting the fact that he can no longer find Dark Chocolate Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, so I'm going to make him some of those. I got some fondant powder, and I'll mix it with some Smucker's peanut butter. I have some forms to make the shape of the cup, so I'll put some chocolate in it, tilt it so the chocolate goes up the sides, then freeze it. If the sides are too thin, I'll go over them again. When that's done, I'll put the peanut butter filling in, cover it with some more chocolate, and freeze the whole thing!

Of course, depending on how fast we can get the ceramic tile down on the floor in the kitchen, I might be doing all this on Christmas Eve morning! But I wouldn't mind that. I'll have the radio tuned to public radio listening to A Festival of Lessons and Carols. I won't have to go up to the Church to decorate until after noon, when 11am Mass is over. We can't start decorating until then, and we have to be done by 3pm, when folks start showing up to get seats for the 4:30 Christmas Vigil Mass!

We'll get most of the stuff ready the day before, and have it all in the Parish Hall downstairs, ready to be moved upstairs. I'm going to set up the 10' tree on Friday. I have to have time to replace the lights on it, and they're going to be able to stay on there for the next few years. We'll light it up during that 3 hours while we're decorating the upstairs on Sunday. The family that does the garland will do it that day, too, or on Saturday morning. It won't matter if they are there already, because the lights won't be turned on until Sunday afternoon, too.

Great...I think my migraines have decided to kick it up a notch. Been having these symptoms the last few times.

Vestibular migraines.

Nice thing is that I don't get quite as bad of a headache, I don't think. Just the light sensitivity and the flashing lights and mild pain. Downside is that the whole world keeps spinning. Every time my chair at work spun a little today and yesterday - and on a few occasions in the past - it seemed wayyyy magnified. Not to the point where I'm falling over or throwing up or anything, but it's unnerving. At least there's a name for it. Yay.

Heh...my kitchen has no space for doing any but the most basic cooking. Need to get a table I can use, I guess. But what you're making sounds good - especially the peanut butter cups! Mmmm...

Didn't you make mints at Entmoot?

Yep, I did. It doesn't take that much space if you're only doing a few things. One of the things I'm going to try this year is make the Ferrero Rocher candies. I bought some whole hazelnuts today, and I have some chopped toasted ones already. You can add heavy cream to the melted chocolate and when you chill it, it becomes soft and nougaty. I'll put a hazelnut in the middle of a little ball of nougat, dip that in chocolate, then sprinkle the still wet chocolate with the chopped hazelnuts. I hope it works!

There is another way to do a delicious candy that only requires a pan to melt the chocolate and a flat shallow cookie pan. You can make a 'bark', like an almond bark, or if you can find a store that sells candy fixings, they now sell a white peppermint flake that you can mix with the chocolate, so you have crunchy pieces inside the chocolate when you bite into it. Yum stuff. You just pour the melted chocolate, into which you've stirred a few drops of peppermint flavoring, sprinkle in whatever goodies you want, stir it in, then put the pan in the refrigerator for about 1/2 hour. When it's hard, you just break it into pieces and package it however you like! You don't need much space for that!

My office is trying to make me gain ten pounds before Christmas.... there's the "sign up to bring in a snack every day for TWO WEEKS before Christmas" thing. And the "Office potluck" the week before Christmas. And the "office Christmas party" next Friday at a hotel in town. Sigh.

Of course, I've eaten tiny dinners and worked out hard this week and I'm up two pounds, so hey.

We just have boxes of Aplets and Cotlets. Which I like, unfortunately. But at least I haven't yet seen fudge or cookies or chocolate.

Sorry about you having migraines... Anything you could do about it if you went to the doctor?

You actually like Aplets and Cotlets?

Good morning!

Speaking of fudge...that might be my best bet if I'm going to attempt to make something. I literally don't have enough counter space to comfortably have both a bowl and a cookiesheet on the counter. Fudge, I could do.

Have either of you shipped fudge? Does it do OK so long as it has completely cooled before putting it in a container, or does it turn gooey?

I'd be hesitant to go to a doctor since they aren't debilitating. And they'd only give me drugs and tell me the scientific name of the particular variety of migraines I get, I'd guess. Most of the time it's only one or two days a month anyhow. I'm just glad the vertigo seems to be linked and not something scarier. ;-)

Yes, I actually like Aplets and Cotlets. We used to give those to Dad every year for his birthday on the 21st...he typically only got a few himself.

Huh... Well, I'm as reluctant to go to the doctor as anyone, so I guess I understand, but I'd go if they could give you better drugs for it.

I think Aplets and Cotlets are sortof like fruitcake.

Fruit cake is only good if it's more booze than fruit...

As for doctor stuff...I don't think they'd do much good unless I went to a real neurologist, which would be a lot spendier than I'd be willing to spring for. And I don't like taking medication if I don't absolutely hafta.

Migraines are supposed to get milder as you get older. I guess I must have hit on a trigger recently, last few months. Just need to figure out what it is.

Hopefully it isn't just weather changes. That could get old.

Aren't you working at a hospital? Hold some neurologist's PC hostage until he gives you a CAT scan.

Just a medical plaza. No neurologists currently in the building. ;-)

Seriously, you probably have to go to a primary care provider first, and be referred.

Too much trouble. I'll stick with being dizzy...er...Rosie. Unless it gets worse.

You could put a layer of wax or parchment paper in the bottom of the carton or tin, then put another piece of paper in between each layer of fudge. If it is not too gooey when you put it in, it should do fine.

You gonna make Fantasy Fudge, aka, Marshmallow Creme Fudge? I love that stuff, and there's a site on the web that has the original recipe. Apparently the one on the jars of Marshmallow Creme they sell now is not the original one, and is not as good. I think Lil told me about it. The site gives LOTS of variations, too, some of which I tried last year and they were delicious!

Oh, well, that's too bad. I was just thinking free health care would be a nice perk.

I'm in code heaven. They gave me a "here's what we need to do, here's where to find what you need" assignment and set me free. No coding constraints or previous code to incorporate. They gave me a design document and said please deviate from it as much as you'd like. I've been writing code for two solid hours and I can look forward to another two or three days of it before I have to really test.
