I am 2 hours post-op surgery.
The last words I heard before going under anesthesia were: "Quit Smoking"..from the anestheseologist.
The first words I heard coming out of the anesthesia, again by the anestheseologist, were "QUIT SMOKING".
Please...no pros\cons of smoking. Perhaps I'm too close to the surgery but, smoking now dries out my mouth, taste absolutely rotten and gives me a headache. I now have very little desire to smoke.
Please, no comments about no desire.
I don't think what the anestheseologist did is right. It's not his call to get me to quit smoking, it's mine...if and when I'm ready.
Is what he did legal ?
You just showed the rest of your ass with your assumption!
FYI, I live with a smoker and regularly socialize with smokers. I am the rare non smoker in my group.
My disgust is with whiners and the victim mentality so prevalent in society and even on FR.
Hey, wow! Thanks. ;>
This topic may be the best for bringing out the hidden internal authoritarian boss, busybody, and scold in people.
That's a complete load of BS!
His complaint is real. My complaints are real.
This smoking Nazi thing is a symptom of something bigger and more egregious. A segment of the population believes blindly that it has the right and the duty to correct imperfections as they see them, in the rest of society when it suits them to do so.
They do this now on the conservative side of the political spectrum, where once upon a time, this sort of crap was confined to liberals.
You sir, and some others here on this thread, are not seeing the truth of this, and attack me when I try to point it out to you.
How quaint!
One day, with this practice now being acceptable, some imperfection that you have will be noticed and the Nazi's will be after you...(One can only hope)
I certainly do hope this happens soon, while the topic is fresh.
In the mean time, keep your pious accusations to yourself, and realize that nobody wants or needs to hear them.
You hide behind freedoms that were earned by people who likely gave up their lives, yet you throw all that out the window so easily when the topic is one that you disapprove of.
Think before you jump that shark again, and understand that I will be there to point it out when you do. I will not allow you place blame on the person who's personal rights were violated by a person who had no permissions to do so. This is misdirection and a liberal tactic IMO.
It seems to me, that conservatives, if you fit that description, have adopted the same sort of holier than thou mentality as their liberal counterparts when it involves social topics, and I will fight this sort of thing to the death if necessary.
I hope I made my points clear enough for you to understand. In the interim, I will continue to wonder why a conservative governor like Mike Huckabee suddenly turned personal freedoms on it's head and signed into law a smoking ban for the entire State of Arkansas, and just how he decided this was a exception to the rule. And how others do as well....
Wonder what is next.........???? Perhaps Dog and Cat citizenship to give them human rights....Perhaps no knock search warrants to see what you might be doing wrong in the privacy of your home or bedroom..
What is next.......?
Is is far-fetched to worry about this?
Not anymore, Not anymore.
Shut up.
If it were subliminal (or hypnotic for that matter), then stylin wouldn't remember the anesthesiologist saying "Stop Smoking" either time.
It has indeed.....
Conservatism has a natural affinity for authoritarianism. As a conservative, one must realize this and balance it with some small "L" libertine beliefs, or it can easily get out of control, which it has on a few occasions in the past few years of republican domination in the House and perhaps to a lesser degree in the Senate. But I see it more in the local governance.
There is little consistency on the various personal issues. On one hand there is great consternation over property rights and freedom of association and from the same mouth comes support for stronger laws and/or prohibitions regarding sex, smoking, the environment, dress and even language....or on some occasions, thought it's self.
At times, this stuff is way over the top, and is defended strongly by those who have advocated it, and with invectives usually saved for issues of principle.
I find it very worrisome, and as a lifelong fiscal conservative and hawk, it often becomes a subject of great concern for me, and many who have never strayed from party loyalty for a single second.
I think this is partly responsible for the position that some conservatives find themselves in for the 2006 cycle. I voted a straight ticket this year, mostly because of my desire to continue our foreign policy initiatives, but this will weigh heavily on me in 2008 if it continues to become worse.
I am certainly not alone with my observations, and I am not a Libertarian or anything close to it. Your observation of authoritarianism is spot on.
Ooooo, somebody got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning....or was it the couch?
Got any more cliches to use to try to hide that you have nothing to say but still whine aplenty?
A medical professional, a doctor, gives a patient sound medical advice and you want to get into lost freedoms, patriots' blood shed, 'jumping the shark', smoking NAZIs, authoritarianism, etc, etc.
First, I really think you need a big hug from someone near you and a cup of hot chocolate.
Next, you really need to keep things in context. This isn't a government official forcing someone to do something harmful or distasteful and any comparison suggesting that is invalid.
Finally, when you complain and make a fuss about something insignificant then people will have less tendency to listen to you when you have a serious complaint about a significant issue. Yes, you're crying 'wolf!'.
Here is how I look at it. In a free society, there are temptations which allow individuals to develop and exercise moral muscle and virtuous conduct. Take away the temptations and it is not vitue, anymore, because it is not chosen.
:-)
Scuse me while I barf!
That was not advise, it was a form of coercion.
Something you don't seem to mind, nor care about, but I do.
The bench on the front porch.
yeah, smokers breath gets you banished from the bedroom.
So does farting.
Well, stop eating the crab cakes and beans before bed.
Yeah, crab cakes are always on my list for late night snacks.
"Re: the smoking
After a nights sleep I still really gave no desire to smoke. I'm just smoking out of spite.
Now THAT's nuts."
Nah, nuts is when you're hospitalized with pneumonia and sneak into the bathroom to have one. What are they gonna do, throw you out? Or, quit for a year and start again after saying NO to the urge appoximately 20,000 times! For anyone counting, that's 2 1/2 packs a day and I picked up this week again, right where I left off.
For all my illnesses, and harping by doctors, funny thing, not a single one disappeared when I quit, not even the addiction. Don't listen to what anyone says, if and when you're ever ready to quit, you will.
