The charges against the Duke lacrosse players should be dropped immediately, and the people demanding the dismissal the loudest and most forcefully should be the very people who have made a living allegedly fighting against racial injustice.
I've said this before, but it's worth saying again: Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton should be in Durham, N.C., today, promising civil disobedience until the charges are dropped and prosecutor Mike Nifong resigns.
Ed Bradley and "60 Minutes" should never be mistaken for Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court. Bradley is just a TV reporter and "60 Minutes" is just a TV show, but you couldn't help but be moved by the story they aired Sunday night about the Duke lacrosse rape allegations.
The three accused players gave their first interviews, and two of them claimed they had airtight, documented alibis. The accuser's one-night sidekick, Kim Roberts, seems to have settled on telling the truth rather than trying to spin the story for fame or money. She contradicted several of the statements the accuser gave to police.

Ditto. When we used to get hammered in our younger years, really hammered, there's no telling how many times we fell, hung onto walls, tripped, etc., and I can well remember that anytime you bend over forward when really plowed, you're teasing gravity to finish the job. Then you can't just lay down where you fell and close your eyes and go to sleep because the room is spinning. LOL! When we got that bad, we'd start dancing (stereo always blasting) in sort of an aerobic way under the theory that the intensity of the exercise would speed the burning off of the alcohol so we could lay down and sleep without barfing. It sort of worked. :>
Geez, the hangovers. Glad those days are behind me. No way could we handle that now.
It won't do him any good. The other side will just save it for Monday, after they've had a chance to review it carefully, and let the media have the entire week to chew on it.
Yeah, white Duke students should go out into the "black community" of Durham and aid its denizens. They shouldn't worry about being sued, falsely accused of all manner of unsavory crimes, robbed, hustled, criticized, taunted, threatened and called names.
Supposedly there is a picture of her while "falling", so maybe we will get more info.
Video would be great, too....
Wonder what Nifong will spring on the defense today?
I'm back from the media confab. Detailed report later.
Election procedures: Well that discussion was for the primary but I'm not sure it's the same for the general election.
A 12:37 photo shows she's lying on the back stoop; she fell, according to Ekstrand. Her elbow is dusted and scraped, and her ankle is cut and bleeding.Newsweek Article
That shouldn't even be a consideration at this point. They might as well get shirts with targets printed on them.
Is that a teaser or a nothing significant happened?
Teaser. Needs more time for detailed write up.
Short form: With one loudmouthed exception, crowd uniformly hostile to media. Media says we trusted Nifong and he lied to us and defense wouldn't talk to us so we were fooled and told one side of story.
I didn't get to ask a question but there were plenty.
A reliable source has it that during coverage at WTVD Channel 11 there was a brief shot of me on the 5:30 news to be repeated at 6. It's live on line. Ya'll can guess which one I am.
What happened to the discovery turnover today?
Was anything turned over?
Was the loud-mouthed exception anybody we've heard of before in this case? Was it a Tory Peterson type or just some media shill?
Media is willing to say in a meeting Liefong lied but they won't print it?
"Media is willing to say in a meeting Liefong lied but they won't print it?"
I agree. Where is the story about Nifong the hoaxer?
What are they waiting for? There's more than enough now
to write the article.
Anything they write after this is just going to lack
any standing at all--because they kept silent when they could have spoken out--knowing the truth all the while.
I hope that LB can tell us what their justification was for going ahead and using such derogatory descriptions about the boys and telling one side of the story. Surely the fact that the defense was not yet ready to talk to them isn't their justification for taking the position the boys were guilty and for basically calling them spoiled, rich "white" kids?
"I hope that LB can tell us what their justification was for going ahead and using such derogatory descriptions about the boys"
Correct. The players were demonized in every possible way, while their accuser was portrayed as a single working mother of 2 (no mention of her being tossed from the navy, her previous claim of gang rape, her selling drugs at 14, her joyriding in a car and trying to run down a policeman--but hey, what's that compared to Evans' making a racket with some trash cans at midnight?)
Sadly, one of the worst offenders in the early days was ESPN. You would think that they would have a little more respect for athletes! At least give them the benefit of the doubt! They crucified those boys on line, on their shows and in print.
If she fell while going DOWN the steps, she most likely would have fallen forward toward the ground, not backwards toward the porch. When going down steps, the propensity is to fall forward, not backward. Maybe she was going back UP the steps when she fell. That would explain her being sprawled across the steps. Since there's a photo of her lying on the porch and one of her lying sprawled across the steps, head on or toward the porch, maybe she fell TWICE.
The bias is absolutely sickening. I am so sick of our media I really could just scream.
Yes, that was surprising. I don't watch ESPN, but I read about some of the statements made about the case on ESPN.
Truly deplorable.
Defense wouldn't talk to us? I call BS on that one. The AV supporters are consistantly telling us that the only thing we hear is defense spin. The press apparently hasn't been following the case.
Thanks LB. You are the best.
