The Little Red Spot's winds, now raging up to approximately 400 miles per hour, signal that the storm is growing stronger, according to the NASA-led team that made the Hubble observations. The increased intensity of the storm probably caused it to change color from its original white in late 2005, according to the team... Although it seems small when viewed against Jupiter's vast scale, the Little Red Spot is actually about the size of Earth, and the Great Red Spot is around three Earth diameters across... The Little Red Spot is the only survivor among three white-colored storms that merged together. In the 1940s, the three storms were seen forming in a band slightly below the Great Red Spot. In 1998, two of the storms merged into one, which then merged with the third storm in 2000. In 2005, amateur astronomers noticed that this remaining, larger storm was changing color, and it became known as the Little Red Spot after becoming noticeably red in early 2006.

Cebuano discovers Jupiter "Red Spot Jr" from his backyardHis discovery sent the astronomers worldwide in a magnificent panic. NASA website, on March 3, 2006 read: "Backyard astronomers grab your telescopes. Jupiter is growing a new red spot. Christopher Go of the Philippines photographed it on February 27th using an 11-inch telescope and a CCD camera." ... "The spot was an existing storm on planet Jupiter, called Oval BA. It started with three spots in the 1930s and 1940s, and during that time there was a disturbance in the south tropical zone of Jupiter. It created three south temperate spots, and in the 1998 to 2003 the spots merged and formed the Oval BA. It was still white during that time and it remained white for five years until December of last year. I think that on December 1 to 9, 2005, the spot turned red. It took about three months for the discovery because of the condition of Jupiter. It was very low so nobody in the earth's northern hemisphere was able to see it. It's a little higher here in the Philippines compared to other places in the northern hemisphere. Higher in terms of latitude, which means, Jupiter is more visible in Cebu."

It's nice to know that somebody from my wife's part of the Philippines discovered it. Still, as long as no one is planning to live on Jupiter, there's no cause for alarm.

Heh... maybe on a raft, floating on whatever is the surface of Jupiter. But from the looks of the storms, I doubt it would be long before it capsized. ;')
One has to wonder what's going on under the surface to make the surface act like that. :'D
