Just watching the Dodgers' game against the San Diego Padres, a team that owns the Dodgers (about as much as does the St. Louis Cardinals). For example, the Dodgers have one win at home against San Diego, versus 8 or 9 losses...including the last two. The Padres are 1/2 game ahead of the Dodgers for the National League West division.
The Padres went into the bottom of the ninth inning, at Dodger Stadium, trailing the Padres 9-5. Four batters later, the Dodgers had tied the game at 9, thanks to four straight home runs, courtesy of Jeff Kent, J.D. Drew (a definite defensive liability at right field), Russell Martin and Marlon Anderson.
It is the fourth time that any major league team has hit four or more straight home runs in one game, and the first time since the Minnesota Twins did it in 1963.
The game went to extra innings, where a ball hit to - who else - J.D. Through (as in I hope he's through with the Dodgers) resulted in the Padres retaking the lead, 10-9.
I am about ready to throw something, I'm so mad.
Update: Nomar Garciaparra just hit a walk off two run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Dodgers defeat the Padres, 11-10.
The great Vin Scully, 50 year broadcaster of the Dodgers, was silent for at least a good two minutes, then said, just as calmly as if someone just walked, "I forgot to mention something...the Dodgers are in first place!"
I need oxygen.
I wish I'd watched the whole game!
Well, I wasn't silent for about two minutes after the walkoff - my neighbors came rushing out to see a grown man screaming at the top of his lungs aboiut Rudy F'ing Seanez and the other relievers who turned a great win for my Padres into a disaster.
The good news is we are even in the loss column...
We get Arizona and Pittsburgh at home this week, then go to St Louis and Arizona next week to finish the season. Who do the Dodgers have? I know Pittsburgh is in tomorrow - the best team in the league in the last three weeks.
I still say 87 wins will win the division, since both teams are playing about 0.550 baseball the last two weeks. At least the Giants are nearly out of contention.
I'm almost settled down enough to go to bed.
Three versus Pittsburgh, three versus Arizona, a day off, three at Williamsport (Colorado), and three at Battery Chuck Park in San Francisco to finish the regular season.
Should the Dodgers and Padres finish the regular season tied, the Dodgers would host the one game playoff.
I feel like I need a drink...at least it is ok for me to be around sharp objects again! The sports shows (Cowherd, Rome, Dan Patrick, Loose Cannons, Mason & Ireland) should be very interesting tomorrow.
They're supposed to be replaying it now on Prime Ticket, but they are showing some stupid Bruin rewind program of a meaningless early season football game. If they don't replay it tonight, they usually will show it close to noon the next day. (or right at noon, on Prime Ticket)
So do all those people in the parking lot trying to beat the traffic.
What a great game.
I just saw the highlights on SportsCenter. Unbelievable. It's one thing to give up a grand slam but four straight dingers?
Fans of the Azul....FEELIN' YOU!!!
I followed the results listening to Lee Klein on XTRA as I was working on a project in my office. They announced the four in a row and a dashed for the TV! I even missed the final HR, but saw the highlights on the news.
NOMAH!
Awesome!
GO, DODGERS!!!
And ... I REVERE Vin Scully. He is a human wonder!
How sweet it is - the Dodgers clinch a playoff spot - in San Francisco. Dodgers win 4-2, Maddux gets the win.
With the win, the Phillies are eliminated from playoff consideration. At last check, the Padres were leading in Arizona 3-1, and still are. It is TO 9th, 2 outs, 1 on, and Trevor Hoffman is warming in the bullpen. (He's not unhittable, as the Dodgers proved a fortnight ago)
If the Dodgers tie the Padres, as I understand, the Padres would win the West, due to head to head. Both the Dodgers and Padres have clinched spots in the postseason. The Dodgers would then play the Mets, and the Padres would play the winner of the NL Central.
