The game went to extra innings, where a ball hit to - who else - J.D. Through (as in I hope he's through with the Dodgers) resulted in the Padres retaking the lead, 10-9.
I am about ready to throw something, I'm so mad.
Update: Nomar Garciaparra just hit a walk off two run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Dodgers defeat the Padres, 11-10.
The great Vin Scully, 50 year broadcaster of the Dodgers, was silent for at least a good two minutes, then said, just as calmly as if someone just walked, "I forgot to mention something...the Dodgers are in first place!"
I need oxygen.
I just saw the highlights on SportsCenter. Unbelievable. It's one thing to give up a grand slam but four straight dingers?
Awesome!
How sweet it is - the Dodgers clinch a playoff spot - in San Francisco. Dodgers win 4-2, Maddux gets the win.
With the win, the Phillies are eliminated from playoff consideration. At last check, the Padres were leading in Arizona 3-1, and still are. It is TO 9th, 2 outs, 1 on, and Trevor Hoffman is warming in the bullpen. (He's not unhittable, as the Dodgers proved a fortnight ago)
If the Dodgers tie the Padres, as I understand, the Padres would win the West, due to head to head. Both the Dodgers and Padres have clinched spots in the postseason. The Dodgers would then play the Mets, and the Padres would play the winner of the NL Central.
