In an blockbusting EXCLUSIVE interview on Dateline NBC, correspondent Matt Lauer sat down with Debra Lafave, the 23 year-old teacher who had sex with a 14 year-old boy on several occasions which made national headlines.
For some ungodly reason, NBC decided this was a groundbreaking story that needed to be told to America. I have one question
Why is Debra Lafave on television?
There have been notable people who have earned the right to recognition. Sports heroes, movie stars, business and religious leaders, respected politicians and cultural groundbreakers have all proven worthy of the media attention paid to them. That is why we feel we know Michael Jordan, Jennifer Anniston, Donald Trump, Reverend Billy Graham, John McCain and Simon Cowell. They have been talented, colorful, daring, mesmerizing, dynamic, blessed and outrageous! But, they have not broken the law, are not mentally ill and do not continue to lie and be in denial about their irresponsible behavior... [more at CaliforniaRepubic]

At 14 she wouldn't have messed me up.
That is your opinion...and it is just that, an opinion. You, in fact, would have NO IDEA what damage it would have done to you. There is a reason 14 year olds don't vote, drive cars, drink liquor, have full time employment, sign contracts and HAVE SEX WITH ADULTS.
GIVE ME A BREAK.

My first thought. Normally I don't watch those mushy morning alphabet shows, but it was on in the doctor's office I was at.
Why are they putting this child rapist on TV? .

Here in FL a man would be toasted.
I know someone (man) who had sex with a trio of teens, mostly older. They were not separate incidents, and the kids tried to shake him down for money after.
He is doing 105 years in prison.

So many of us Old Farts look back fondly at our schooldays, for many reasons. However, when I concentrate on the female teacher aspect of my education, all I get is visions of Helen Thomas.............AAAGGHHHHH..MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!
---
In 8th grade my English teacher was Ms. Reicher. She was in Playboy in the mid 1960s. When I would cut up in class she'd walk by me and smile and pat me on top of my head!
Every boy in class wanted her! She was stacked to the hilt!

I'm not sure about the frequency... a February 18, 2005 article in the Washington Post stated that to date, from 1950-2004, 11, 750 people had made claims that a priest sexually molested them, the majority of the molestation occurring in the 1960's and 1970's, with males aged 10-14.
According to the following quote from a 2004 Newsmax article, which references a US Department of Education report stating that between 6-10% of US school children report being molested or abused by their teachers, it would seem that teachers face similar accusation rates as priests.
Quote from the Newsmax article: "Now, on the heels of the Catholic abuse scandal comes another of historic proportionsone that has the potential to be much greater and far-reaching. According to a draft report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education, in compliance with the 2002 "No Child Left Behind" act signed into law by President Bush, between 6 percent and 10 percent of public school children across the country have been sexually abused or harassed by school employees and teachers.
Charol Shakeshaft, the Hofstra University scholar who prepared the report, said the number of abuse caseswhich range from unwanted sexual comments to rapecould be much higher.
"So we think the Catholic Church has a problem?" she told industry newspaper Education Week in a March 10 interview.
To support her contention, Shakeshaft compared the priest abuse data with data collected in a national survey for the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation in 2000. Extrapolating data from the latter, she estimated roughly 290,000 students experienced some sort of physical sexual abuse by a school employee from a single decade1991-2000. That compares with about five decades of cases of abusive priests"
But, like you, I doubt seriously that the media will hold "investigative" reports and the like on the teacher scandals.

I always thought the whole phenomenon of teachers seducing students should be treated in a vastly different way.
I think we should treat it as a workplace violation, and charge the teachers with creating a hostile work environment, sexual harassment, and all the other stuff that businesses worry about. How would we handle it if the teacher were the boss, and the student were the secretary?
