N.Y. Trooper Shot in Convict Search Dies Monday September 4, 2006 12:46 AM CASSADAGA, N.Y. (AP) - One of two specially trained New York state troopers ambushed while searching for an escaped convict died Sunday of his injuries, state police said. Joseph Longobardo was shot in the leg Thursday night while staking out the property of a relative of Ralph ``Bucky'' Phillips. He died Sunday at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo with his wife at his side, State Police Superintendent Wayne Bennett said at a news conference Sunday night. The announcement came in the midst of one of the largest manhunts in New York history and as Longobardo's fellow troopers held a candlelight vigil for him and for Donald Baker Jr., the other trooper shot in the woods of Chautauqua County. Baker, who was shot in the back, remained in critical condition in a medically induced coma, police said.

Dammit!
RIP, NYS Trooper Joseph Longobardo...
They'll find the subhuman POS, and exact punishment. Count on it, sir.
I don't understand--perhaps someone with more medical knowledge than I have can explain this tragedy to me. I can understand how a man shot in the leg could, perhaps, bleed to death immediately, but how would a leg wound kill three days later, in this day and age? What could have happened?
Sometimes when things are awful we seek explanations, as if that will make it better.
A case made for the death penalty, which NY doesn't have, unfortunately.
From what I read from various sources over the last two days, the Trooper took a high powered bullet in the femoral artery. He was airlifted and required at least 50 units of blood. The leg was amputated earlier today. He had been kept in a medically induced coma the entire time.
There are all sorts of complications of coma and surgery.

May god be with him, and with his family.
If I understood perfesser McCoy on "Law & Order", actually New York State does have the death penalty for "special circumstances" and this one might just qualify.
So sorry to hear this. Rest in peace Trooper Longobardo, and may God bless you.
They did have special circumstances, and the murder of a cop was one of them, but when was the last time they actually used it?
Thank you for explaining that. How very sad.

I deal with gunshot wounds to the extremities often. There are complications from losing too much blood, transfusion reactions, blood clots, fatty embolisms, contamination of the site, tissue toxins affecting the liver and heart, septicemia, and with the amputation the same complications compounded. The stress from the trauma and resulting surgeries can be too much. It amazes me that the success rate of military trauma surgeons is as high as it is.
I kinda suspect that this guy will never live to see the inside of a courtroom again.
That's one argument, the counter argument is that a police officer in the line of duty is acting for the people collectively, an attack on a police officer, like an attack on a judge or a lawyer, is an attack on the rule of law.
This has been a very bad month.
Peace be with you, Joe, and a speedy recovery to Donnie and Tony.
Seems to me that an attack on anyone is pretty much an attack on the rule of law.

God rest his soul and give no respite to his murderer. NY police: run the scum to earth and show only as much mercy as he did his victims. This one gets no earthly trial.
