Idiocracy (Vanity)

Posted on 09/02/2006 3:13:44 PM PDT by Ptarmigan

Just came back from the movie theater from seeing Idiocracy. It is directed by Mike Judge and had limited release due to offending some people and litigations filed by Costco, Fuddruckers, and Starbucks. It almost got shelved for good as a result. Actually, it is a really funny movie. Private Joe Bowers and a prostitute named Rita are frozen and are forgotten and fast forward to 500 years later. America has gotten dumber. All the dumb people reproduce like rabbits. The world is infested with litter and people are dumb. Bowers and Rita are the smartest. The world reminds me of a city run by lefties, like New Orleans or San Francisco. Everyone has barcodes and half of America is employed by a large drink company. Starbucks is a brothel, while Costco rules the world. Everyone is named after a giant retailer or company and wear clothings with their logos. You should see it.

Is this the same Mike Judge of Beavis and Butthead fame?

Yes, it is the Mike Judge of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill.

I always forget KOTH but remember because Hank is sort of an adaptation of Mr. Anderson.

Hank Hill and Tom Anderson sound the same. Even Anderson's wife kinda looked like Peggy Hill.

And Office Space. Judging by the limited release of Idiocracy and absolute zero advertisement, Fox has no idea how to promote his movies. Yet at every turn he has put out something that has become popular.

I didn't see any promotions. I have heard of Idiocracy for some time. It was shelved because some companies were offended and sued. It also has other contents that could offend other people. Anyways, it was very funny. If it got a full release, it likely will do well.

Were they frozen in, say, the year 1506 or so?

They were frozen in 2005 and woke up in 2505.

Comedy? Sounds more like a documentary to me.

Not South Park-related, but close enough!

The fact is in that movie, it is like today. Just watch Jerry Springer and see all those trailer trash duke it out and the hip-hop culture.

A Google search reveals several articles that criticize the lack of promotion of this movie.

ATTENTION SOUTH PARK PING LIST:

Not South Park, but this sounds like it's worth a look.

FYI, director-writer Mike Judge voiced Kenny's goodbye in "South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut."

If they didn't credit Kornbluth, I'll be pretty disappointed. This is one of the sci-fi stories that influenced my earliest socio-political developement, along with "Harrison Bergeron" by Vonnegut.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Marching_Morons
"The Marching Morons" is a science fiction short story written by Cyril M. Kornbluth, originally published in Galaxy in April, 1951.

The story is set hundreds of years in the future: the date is 7-B-936. A man from the past, John Barlow, is reanimated in this future. The world seems mad to Barlow until Tinny-Peete explains The Problem of Population: due to a combination of intelligent people prudently not having children and excessive breeding by lesser intelligent people, the world is full of morons with the exception of an elite few who work slavishly to keep order. Barlow, who was a shrewd conman in his day, has a solution to sell to the elite.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Bergeron

"Harrison Bergeron" is a dystopian science fiction short story written by Kurt Vonnegut and first published in 1961. It deals with egalitarianism. The theme is set by the first line: "The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal." Originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in October 1961, the story is now available in the author's collection Welcome to the Monkey House.

And don't forget Ira Levin's "This Perfect Day." I know it was out of print for a while, but you might be able to find it.

Thanks for the heads up. It's pathetic they don't give it a wide release, like they did to Little Man and Inconvient Truth.
