A cruel fate awaits these horses at the Kaufman slaughterhouse.
Warning: This video contains disturbing images of the slaughter of Horses
[It's images hard to ease from your mind so beware.]
From the Alamo to the open range, the horse is permanently woven into the fabric of Texas.
A cruel fate awaits these horses at the Kaufman slaughterhouse.
But this symbol of the west is being slaughtered by the thousands here in Texas, only to end up on the dinner tables of Europe.
Next week, Congress could change that and for residents of one Texas town it cant be soon enough.
In the shadows of a great American symbol, a great American icon quietly begins to stir. A nearby dumpster and a vulture circling above hint at the gruesome fate that awaits.
And so begins another day at the Dallas Crown Plant in Kaufman, Texas.
Its a dirty little secret, that doesnt benefit the city of Kaufman, the state of Texas or the United States, said Kaufman mayor Paula Bacon.
Americans think there are laws to protect horses. They have no idea that three foreign-owned slaughterhouses, not American-owned, are operating in this country, two in Texas, and killing 100,000 American horses.

So, it is wrong to kill horses but ok to slaught cattle, sheep, pigs and so on.
I think this is a ploy by the "animal cruelty" gang to get people to quit eating meat.
Kit Carson ate horses to survive. So did Lewis and Clark. They ate mules as well.

"Bag up the dims and leave the friggen horses alone."
Everyone knows the dims have no taste and are tough to swallow.
Yum yum .
Horsemean is very lean, how is this different than slaughtering cows. Don't tell me horses are smarter
Applying different values to varying animals is a slippery and very liberal slope. let people eat dogs horses and cats Peopl eat Deer and they are much prettier than horses IMHO.
Just curious, if you own a dog or cat, would you, say, just for the curiosity of seeing how it tastes, would you eat it? Or would "emotions" hold you back?
And don't give any of that crap about Asians who eat dogs.
Yeah, I make all my important decisions based on what Christie Brinkley, Whoopie Goldberg and Ellen Degeneres think. The heck with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. They have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to livestock.
And don't give any of that crap about Asians who eat dogs.
I've eaten dog in Korea, And monkey in the Philippines. What makes a pet different from an animal raised for food is the love you put into it - nothing more.
This is not new news. It has been going on for at least 30 years that I know of and probably longer than that. Much of the horse meat goes to Japan.
Thanks for the ping.... busy day today and no time to participate in this thread, but as for horse slaughter, I'm on record against it :~)
The only thing dumber than a horse is someone who would own one. Why not eat them? It may be one of the few things the French do correctly.
I didn't page through all the replies but my "tack" on this subject is that I simply don't care ... The French have always eaten horse ,, those of us who have been around horses know how absolutely stupid they are ,, why do you think horse pastures have rounded corners? Horses are much stupider than cows , a cow will stop if running up to a fence... the horse needs the hint given by the curved fence corner that he better turn....
It's all well and good for the celebrities to add their names to a piece of paper. What they really need to do is fork over the money to create sanctuaries for the horses. There is no need to stop horse slaughter, horses bought for slaughter are the bottom of the market, they are bought by killer buyers because no one else is willing to pay for their upkeep. There is no need to change the law, the people that want to save the horses need to put their money where their mouths are and buy property, set up sanctuaries and then go to the killer buyers and offer them more for the horses than the slaughter houses are offering. It's that simple.
I get so tired of folks wanting solutions to problems like this to be so easy. Easy for them- just sign your name or call your elected representative. The problem is that does NOT solve the problem that created the horse slaughter market to begin with. The root cause is unwanted horses- between 60,000-100,000 horses per year. Who is going to take care of them??
This country has already been here and done this on a smaller scale. Protestors and petition signers stopped the gathering of wild horses for money and the slaughter of unwanted wild horses and now the federal government has feedlots set up to care for those unwanted horses. The taxpayers are paying every month to feed and care for them and there is still no solution what to do with them.
I strongly believe that anyone who wants to make these changes is free to do so, but why not put up their own money to do it??
I love horses, we keep all of our old horses and care for them until death. We are willing to pay the price of their upkeep and have taken in horses that others would not or could not care for. We have saved horses that were literally in the trailer on their way to a killer buyer. The difference is that is our decision, we get to decide how many we can afford to care for, we get to decide which horses to care for. I would never choose to make that decision for all taxpayers and neither should the folks fighting to end horse slaughter.
I am against stopping horse slaughter until there is a real workable solution of what to do with all the unwanted horses. The funny thing is, when that issue is solved the slaughter houses will have to close from lack of product, there will be no need to outlaw them.
"Do you eat pork? Some people do and pigs are a lot more intelligent than horses."
Yes, I do eat pork. Pigs are a heck of a lot meaner than horses, so I don't have a problem with that. I've raised both horses and pigs, among other critters. I won't go so far as to say it really makes sense, just that some are prejudiced against one or another, and I know which I'll eat, and which I won't. (Given a choice, and barring actual starvation, at any rate.)
Why? This is a stupid law. Horses are not endangered, they are just being turned into food. What's the big deal?
Next thing you know someone will get pissed off that Koreans, Chinese and Amerinds eat dog.
Some people do and it can be delicious.
In a heartbeat. My criteria of restrictions for possible food sources is limited only by it's intelligence. No humans. Anything else is edible.
I don't really have a problem with this if it's done in a humane way. Dog food also used to be made out of horseflesh (maybe it still is?) My only problem is that they're being used by French people to stuff their faces. That's an insult; if you were a horse would you want to be eaten by a Frog?
