Yeah, I make all my important decisions based on what Christie Brinkley, Whoopie Goldberg and Ellen Degeneres think. The heck with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. They have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to livestock.
It's all well and good for the celebrities to add their names to a piece of paper. What they really need to do is fork over the money to create sanctuaries for the horses. There is no need to stop horse slaughter, horses bought for slaughter are the bottom of the market, they are bought by killer buyers because no one else is willing to pay for their upkeep. There is no need to change the law, the people that want to save the horses need to put their money where their mouths are and buy property, set up sanctuaries and then go to the killer buyers and offer them more for the horses than the slaughter houses are offering. It's that simple.
I get so tired of folks wanting solutions to problems like this to be so easy. Easy for them- just sign your name or call your elected representative. The problem is that does NOT solve the problem that created the horse slaughter market to begin with. The root cause is unwanted horses- between 60,000-100,000 horses per year. Who is going to take care of them??
This country has already been here and done this on a smaller scale. Protestors and petition signers stopped the gathering of wild horses for money and the slaughter of unwanted wild horses and now the federal government has feedlots set up to care for those unwanted horses. The taxpayers are paying every month to feed and care for them and there is still no solution what to do with them.
I strongly believe that anyone who wants to make these changes is free to do so, but why not put up their own money to do it??
I love horses, we keep all of our old horses and care for them until death. We are willing to pay the price of their upkeep and have taken in horses that others would not or could not care for. We have saved horses that were literally in the trailer on their way to a killer buyer. The difference is that is our decision, we get to decide how many we can afford to care for, we get to decide which horses to care for. I would never choose to make that decision for all taxpayers and neither should the folks fighting to end horse slaughter.
I am against stopping horse slaughter until there is a real workable solution of what to do with all the unwanted horses. The funny thing is, when that issue is solved the slaughter houses will have to close from lack of product, there will be no need to outlaw them.
I'm certainly glad we live in such dull, safe times, that this is of critical importance for Congress to consider.
