From the Alamo to the open range, the horse is permanently woven into the fabric of Texas.
A cruel fate awaits these horses at the Kaufman slaughterhouse.
But this symbol of the west is being slaughtered by the thousands here in Texas, only to end up on the dinner tables of Europe.
Next week, Congress could change that and for residents of one Texas town it can’t be soon enough.
In the shadows of a great American symbol, a great American icon quietly begins to stir. A nearby dumpster and a vulture circling above hint at the gruesome fate that awaits.
And so begins another day at the Dallas Crown Plant in Kaufman, Texas.
“It’s a dirty little secret, that doesn’t benefit the city of Kaufman, the state of Texas or the United States,” said Kaufman mayor Paula Bacon.
Americans think there are laws to protect horses. They have no idea that three foreign-owned slaughterhouses, not American-owned, are operating in this country, two in Texas, and killing 100,000 American horses.

A horse is more equivalent to a dog than to a chicken. They are incredibly intelligent, have significant personalities and they'll bond to a human as well as our "best friends".
My personal objection to *all* meat consumption is wholly centered around the popular methods of slaughter. For smart, compassionate creatures, we humans should be able to come up with a painless, stress-free to dispatch our food. Heck, animals give us strength and life. It seems like that we could give them a little courtesy at the moment of their death.
Or even Filly Morgan, if they deign to eat an American breed.
I'm certainly glad we live in such dull, safe times, that this is of critical importance for Congress to consider.
As funny as this may sound, we had pigs on our farm growing up and one pig we had that we let live to a very ripe old age was quite frankly very much like a dog.
However, I still eat bacon.

Unlikely, since his tail was paralyzed. However, I hope you're right. On the other hand, horses are not stupid, and they do become fearful in strange circumstances, so I doubt your analysis is correct.

As an equine rescue association member, I'd rather see them eaten in France than standing starved in someone's trashy backyard with a partially excreted garbage bag protruding from their rear because they've been neglected by their "loving" owners.
You don't hear much about that sort of thing, do you....of course not. It's unpleasant, but it's real. Study this issue out and GET ALL THE FACTS!

Kentucky U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield is from a state synonymous with horses, represents a district full of horse owners and is a leading advocate in Congress for banning horse slaughter in the United States.

Former Rep. Charles Stenholm, D-Texas, who represents a coalition of organizations opposed to the slaughter ban, said he is glad the Whitfields have three rescued horses.
"That's three down and 124,997 to go," Stenholm said, referring to the estimated 100,000 horses the industry says will be processed in the United States this year, plus about 25,000 animals that will be sent to Canada or Mexico.
"We certainly have no objection to everyone that can and wants to buy and take them," Stenholm said. "If you own a horse and you don't want it to go to slaughter for human consumption, we're with you. But if you want to receive value for your horse (by selling it for slaughter), we think it's your right."

You want to know why horses shouldn't be slaughtered you ill minded freak? Because they are NOT MEAT ANIMALS!!! They pulled our carts, they gave us thier power so we could ride comfortably, they carried our messages, they led us to WAR! Do you honestly think America would still be america if it weren't for horses? No... We would be under the Brits' if it weren't for horses! For those of you who belive in God, consider this, donkeys end up in slaughter too, and it was a donkey that carried Mary across those vast deserts and mountains while she was pregnant with Jesus Christ. If that donkey hadn't been there (thank God it was), poor Mary would have had to give birth on the cold sandly desert floor. For those who are more political, consider this; nearly 78% of the horses that go to slaughter, are been stolen. Now, the other reason horses should not be slaughtered is because the devices used to slaughter the poor majestic creature are not humane. They are designed for cattle, therefore since the cattle have smaller brains, the bolt is smaller. So when the bolt hits the horses' much, much, much larger brain, the horse is still conciuos. Sadly the horse is disabled. The horses are bled out fully conciuos and well aware of what is happening, and that explains why some of the horses that arn't fully disabled move around a little so they can try to get away.
One last thing, how would you like it (when i say 'you' i mean everyone)if you worked loyally and very hard for your whole life without any pay, and then you found yourself surounded by grief, death, and evil. How would you like to be struck in the head with a bolt and then find yourself in so much pain you wanted to scream, but you couldn't. How would you like it if you were hung upside-down by a chain and then be bled out, ALL WHILE STILL FULLY CONCIOUS! Is that how you would want to end your life? I have nothing more to say, except that those who feel the slaughter of these majestic, caring, sinless, intelligent creatures is OK, then they are black hearted demons from a firey world i fear to think of.

Eh no. Sorry but no mention of any donkey in the Christmas story. Actually Mary walked and on the way she was stepped on by a horse. That is why all horses must die.
Sugar plum, horses played a very small part in the Revolutionary War. So tiny that it would be safe to say that pigs played a bigger part. Unless you want to count the ones the solders had for dinner.
