A cruel fate awaits these horses at the Kaufman slaughterhouse.
Warning: This video contains disturbing images of the slaughter of Horses
[It's images hard to ease from your mind so beware.]
From the Alamo to the open range, the horse is permanently woven into the fabric of Texas.
A cruel fate awaits these horses at the Kaufman slaughterhouse.
But this symbol of the west is being slaughtered by the thousands here in Texas, only to end up on the dinner tables of Europe.
Next week, Congress could change that and for residents of one Texas town it cant be soon enough.
In the shadows of a great American symbol, a great American icon quietly begins to stir. A nearby dumpster and a vulture circling above hint at the gruesome fate that awaits.
And so begins another day at the Dallas Crown Plant in Kaufman, Texas.
Its a dirty little secret, that doesnt benefit the city of Kaufman, the state of Texas or the United States, said Kaufman mayor Paula Bacon.
Americans think there are laws to protect horses. They have no idea that three foreign-owned slaughterhouses, not American-owned, are operating in this country, two in Texas, and killing 100,000 American horses.

We have had relationships with other animals, as a matter of fact cows were ridden and hooked to plows and wagons before horses were and in areas where horse were not available, should we stop eating cows? Cows have also been used to harvest crops. Never have read about any carrying anyone to battle but I wouldn't be surprised, yet I see no one advocating not eating cows, except for vegetarians and they at least include all animals in their lists.
As as I said in an earlier comment this nonsense about not eating horses is emotioal pure and simple and has no logic or basis in fact. When the liberals do this with other issues conservatives jump all over them. I guess it is alright to let emotions rule you if you are a conservative.
The flavor is not bad at all and the quality can be very good in some countries, so I can see why people eat it. I think they are economical as a side effect of population rather than being raised specifically for meat i.e. we raise a lot of horses in this world not necessarily for meat and they have to be disposed of somehow.

This french slaughter house paid in taxes to the US government....$5.00 last yr.
I had horse meat in Europe. It had a kind of twangy flavor that wasn't good by itself, but it was great for chili.
I didn't see that in the article. Did anyone?
Care to be more specific. Someone gets the bill, and you can't just address it to "we."
Belgian.
Did you watch the video?
It reminds me of the furor over slaughtering harp seal pups in 1970s Canada. We react in horror to killing mammals with those big, cute eyes while girding up with paper napkins in anticipation of eating the lobster that screams as it is put alive into boiling water. It was said to be a mammal chauvinist thing, but that rationale fails on the horsie level.
This "we"...me, doesn't contribute to the slaughter of other/any animals for food.
Yep...I'm a vegetarian and...yep, I'm 100% Republican. ;^)
No.
Yes, I can see the sense of that. We did send a horse to the slaughterhouse once, because he was very ill and it's difficult to get rid of a horse body once they are dead. I was a kid and didn't have any say about it, but I have always been haunted by what his last hours and moments must have been like.
It's ok for conservatives to have emotions, and soft hearts. And it's also ok for people to disagree (something that seems to be beyond the understanding of some of FR). It doesn't make us bedwetters, animal rights facists, etc.

*Whinnie* Noted.
, and the Korean eat puppy dog....
Democrats, eat their own, too. :/
It isn't just the French. Just about every industrialized country eats horse meat except Americans. Our squeamishness when it comes to horse meat is a recently discovered culture peculiarity invented in the last few decades, since you used to be able to be readily available in the US not that long ago.
The video is horrible...but that's where get all the awful details.
Are taxes the issue now?
Well, did they pay local property taxes? Did their employees pay income taxes? Maybe the business itself didn't have much of a federal tax liability. Some businesses don't.

The nervous system of a lobster is far different from the nervous system of a harp seal (and I do find it repulsive to skin an animal while it's still alive, I guess that makes me an animal fasicst) or a horse for that matter. I would prefer to see humane slaughter of animals period. And yeah, I eat LOTS of meat.

Dang, only hit send once, honest.
