Harley Stamp Ready to Roll

Harley-Davidson enthusiasts now have their own stamp of approval, thanks to the United States Postal Service.

A 1965 Harley Electra-Glide is featured as one of four new first-class stamps being rolled out in Wisconsin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Capital City Harley-Davidson/Buell, 6200 Millpond Road, on Madison's far east side.

The stamp rollout ceremony at kick-starts the third annual motorcycle ride to raise funds for the Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center.

The stamps were officially introduced to the public Aug. 7 during the 66th annual Harley rally in Sturgis, S.D., and have been unveiled in local ceremonies throughout America since then. They are now on sale at post offices across the country.

The stamps are sold as a block of four in sheets of 20, so Harley enthusiasts can't buy just the Electra-Glide stamp.

"These motorcycles are classics that represent the sense of freedom that is America," said Madison Postmaster Robert Cavinder.

The Harley Electra-Glide is one of four motorcycles represented on the stamps, but the "chopper" stamp could also be a Harley, since most chopper makers use "Milwaukee iron" as the base for their custom bikes, said Capital City owner Bob Oyler.

The set of four stamps also features a 1918 Cleveland and a 1940 Indian.

Robin Elding, customer relations coordinator for the Madison post office, said the Postal Service tries to couple its rollout of new stamps with special community events.

"We try to do it at events that have social awareness, so this is perfect," Elding said.

Dane County Board Supervisor and avid Harley rider Dennis O'Loughlin is the driving force behind the ride, serving as vice chairman of the board of directors for Safe Harbor, an agency that provides comfort and security for children who've been sexually abused.

"We hope to raise between $10,000 and $15,000 from the ride this year," O'Loughlin said. "Events like this make or break it for us."

The Harley riders will be escorted by 10 Dane County Sheriff's Office motorcycle deputies.

The 100-mile ride will head west on rural roads, stopping in Mount Horeb where the deputies will put on a safe riding demonstration at the fire station, before finishing up with a party/fundraiser at Quaker Steak and Lube in Middleton.

Stamp collectors will be able to get a special cancellation for the motorcycle stamps at Capital City Harley-Davidson Saturday.

Hi All-

Sportbikes tend to be more my cup of tea and I'll absolutely be happy to purchase these stamps at my local post office to mail bills, send Christmas cards, and post party invitations. It's all about being up on two wheels and living life to the fullest.

The next person to mention the inane and trite word "donorcycle" anywhere on this thread is a dullard.

...and my Three Degrees of Motorcycle Cliches t-shirt...

I'm gonna be the coolest FReeper ever.

I think it's pretty crappy to give a private company an advertising windfall like this. Not that we should SELL space on postage stamps to companies. But surely America muster a little non-commercialism somewhere inside its great soul and display it on postage stamps.

We need a Great Computer Operating Systems set of stamps. One will show Bill Gates sitting before a Blue Screen of Death. Another the Linux Penguin. Another a translucent Mac.

Christmas cards are a good idea. One of the few places I use stamps. Also, the odd bill. Yeah, cruisers don't really do it for me, but two wheels are two wheels.

Time to hop on my donorcycle and ride to work. (Oops, guess I'm a dullard now :) ).

Lighten up. Harleys are one of the few things still (partially) made in the U.S.A. anymore.
