And now the Dinklemeyer:

Tonight’s strip continues the story of the horrible class field trip.

This is heavily based on a real field trip I went on shortly before drawing this. The field trip was in fact to a landfill, which was probably the lamest place we could have possibly gone. We were learning about waste management or something. This is a caricature of our tour guide, who did in fact have horrible breath. He also did a strange demonstration just like this one that involved a paint can. I still haven’t figured it out.

The other students who went on the field trip found this particular cartoon to be absolutely hilarious.

It was the one where Bush is singing about how tough it is to be president. Called "2-0-5" I believe.

It has kind of a New Year's theme to it.

AH-HAH!

When you mentioned the store manager's opinion, I had a strong hunch that nothing would become of it. I bet the assistant manager gripped to the manager, looking for his OK to write you up, but the manager probably told him to mellow out.

That may be a possibility, but the situation goes WAY deeper than that.

The A.M. took me back to his office and he and I did have a long talk, but I didn't get into any trouble.

There's also a good chance that all this is simply the result of some work-place gossip.

Okay, here's as much of the story as I can reasonably fit into one post:

For starters, Darrin (the A.M.) claimed complete innocence. He said he was never mad at me, and was never going to write me up. So we talked and talked about it and here's the story as much as I can figure...

For starters, I leave the buggy of trash. Darrin finds it. Darrin is annoyed that a bugggy of trash is left there and asks Loran (the guy who works in my department second shift) whose buggy this was. Loran says it's Philip's. Darrin is annoyed at Philip and takes the trash buggy to the back to throw the trash away. Then he sees merchandise (returns I'd picked up) at the bottom, figures he doesn't have time to fool with it, and rolls it off to his office to do it later.

That night, Loran is talking to my department head, Crystal, on the internet. He is IM'ing her. He for some reason says "Philip left a buggy of trash out there, and Darrin is REALLY MAD AT HIM!!! Darrin was in a horrible mood, and Philip is really going to get it!!!"

So the next day, Darrin is off. Loran is off, too. (He was also off today). Crystal comes to me and says, "You're in a lot of trouble! You left a buggy of trash last night! Darrin's really mad at you for it!! You're in hot water when he comes back tomorrow!!"

Needless to say, I start freaking out. Last time I got in trouble with Darrin, he flipped out on me, told me off, threatened to fire me, said next time I did it I was getting written up, etc...so naturally I assume this time, he's going to flip out on me again, and it's going to be even WORSE....

So I'm absolutely terrified and thinking that I'm in big trouble, so I go up to Deon (the head manager) and tell him the whole thing. He reassures me I'm in no trouble, and Darrin's not going to yell at me.

Now right after that, Deon actually called Darrin at home and told him "Philip's freaking out! He's scared to death you're going to write him up over this buggy of trash!" And according to Darrin, he was never going to do that and was completely shocked over this phone call.

So the next day (today), I go in to "face the music," and Darrin takes me to the back room and we have a looong talk, and we got to the bottom of what was happening.

According to him, he is annoyed over the buggy of trash, and it's a bad thing that I did, but he's even MORE annoyed at Loran (and Crystal) for gossipping on the internet about work. Also, I left the buggy of trash there, but there's no reason why Loran, who worked the shift after me, couldn't have gotten it up, so that's another reason to be mad at Loran.

A few minutes later, I see from a distance Darrin talking to Crystal, and she's vehemently denying any wrongdoing. She said she was just warning me over what Loran said.

The first at day working at one of the jobs I had in college my manager told me she felt everyone needs to be fired at least once. So I told her that at my first job my manager called me and told me that he had to cut back staff and I was going to college and he thought I could get a new job easier than any of the other guys. I guess it worked because I kept the job till I moved away.
