Authorities were searching Monday for a man who witnesses said shot and killed an Illinois tourist who was asking for directions.

After dropping his son off at a shopping mall, Ronald Gentile, 54, pulled over in the Coconut Grove area Saturday afternoon, police said. Witnesses reported seeing Gentile roll down the window on his rented white Chevrolet Cobalt. A man dressed in black then apparently approached the vehicle, robbed and shot Gentile.

When I worked in Philly we had a high school intern who worked for our company. He worked late one night and I offered to take him home. He accepted the offer but would only let me take him to a certain point. He said it wasn't safe for me to take him all the way home.

Not quite sure where Coconut Grove is, but I do know one of the scariest experiences in my life was trying to find Hialeah Park back in 1989. Got off I-95, got lost, ended up wandering around somewhere where even the street signs were in Spanish. Just two white boys down for Spring Break, in a brand-new Toyota with Virginia plates. We finally found the racetrack...only running at night. We didn't bother coming back.

Of course, that's not quite as scary as being stuck in a Nissan Sentra with four other friends (including one extremely good-looking blonde) driving by RFK Stadium at 2:00 in the morning...

I have to wonder how many places in this country is it not safe for black Americans to visit? How many neighborhoods do they have some kind of racist attack? I suppose there are some, and that is not right. But why is it we never hear any preaching from elected officials or "community leaders" or clergy about places where it not safe for whites to venture into??

Funny you two should say that. I was just about to post to Calljack that I lived in Philly, and it wasn't anywhere near as scary as the one time I visited Chicago. I visited a friend there who had the idiotic idea to walk us through "the real Chicago." Oh, the remarks made as we passed through... Philadelphians are downright friendly in comparison.

So, people of European descent are threatened in some inner cities, and people of nonEuropean descent are threatened in rural areas of the country.

All racists should be weeded out of the population and put into some sort of rehabilitation institution.

I've lived in Philly and Chicago and Philly to me is about 1,000 times scarier. Chicago certainly has its scary neighborhoods but you truly have to be looking for trouble to stumble into them. In Philly, you can drive from Villanova and forget to make a turn on your way to the Schulylkill and you think you're going to die. You won't ever miss that turn again. It can go from million dollar mansions to one of the scariest places in the city in about 1/2 mile. Also, most of Chicago is clean. Philly is always so dirty.

You see which way you're pointing?

You see that place?

Do you see the sign, "Rib Tips"?

Well, f that, you don't want to go that way.

You go half a block down the street and you'll see a Torino
with no wheels on it.

Now, inside that Torino is my cousin, Jackie.

Now you tell him that you're my boy, and that you're lost.

He'll make sure you get where you're going. You don't want to know from me. I'm not from this neighborhood. I'm from the west side of Chicago, here on vacation.

I have to wonder how many places in this country is it not safe for black Americans to visit?

Those places still exist only in the imaginations of leftists, Hollywood screenwriters, and the Jesse Jacksons of the world. And those who claim they exist are exaggerating a "look" or misinterpreting something said.

I admit that stupid things get said, but simple knuckle-dragging racist comments are NOT life threatening.

There are racist areas of the country for all people groups. in some places (apparently this coconut grove is one of them) people of European descent experience racism. in other places it is people of African descent. And it isn't even necessarily one on one either. A place with both people of European and African descent living peaceful could still be racist toward another people group. All Americans (and foreigners, tourists and immigrants) should be safe to travel to all parts of the country (except for secret military installations, etc.).

I used to work in Dearborn, right on the Detroit border. Detroit is a Third World Country . . . I've never seen anything like it in the U.S. And I'm a South-Sider (Chicago).

The first time I went to New Orleans was with a friend who had family there. We got lost so he called his cousin from a pay phone to get directions.

The first thing she asked him was where he was calling from. He read her the street from the sign. She then told him to immediately hang up, get in the car, and drive someplace else and call her again. He started to question her, but she just yelled "Get out of there....NOW!"

Welcome to New Orleans.

IMO Chicago was filthier. I stayed in a "nice section" of the city, but I thought Philly was nicer. Of course, that was almost 20 years ago. Maybe it's nicer there now.

Chicago's downtown is the greatest place...but you wonder off a few miles from downtown as tourists tend to do...and you're asking for trouble...

I was just about to post that, the rest of the Grove is nice, there are some areas of Coconut Grove that rival ANY, in terms of rich people living there, the majority of the Grove is nice, its fun, there's the main tourist boulevard close by the water, beautiful.. but then there is Grand Avenue.. Don't EVER leave your window down, and avoid stopping at stop signs and traffic lights. Of course, those rules only apply for daytime driving, at night, DON'T DRIVE through there..
