Strippers plan to tube New Braunfels river Sunday
Chron ^ | July 27, 2006 | AP

NEW BRAUNFELS — In the midst of attempts to crack down on raunchy and rowdy behavior during traditional summertime tubing river trips through this city, a San Antonio topless club is planning a tubing excursion featuring strippers.

Trey Maddox, a manager at Palace Men's Club, said Sunday's excursion on the Comal River — during which men can pay $25 to join the strippers — isn't meant to fly in the face of the city's new rules.

"We're not hookers, dope dealers or Mafia thugs," he said, noting that the strippers will be appropriately dressed. "We're just coming to have a good time."

City Councilman Ken Valentine isn't so sure.

"I'm really disappointed that this is going to occur on Sunday when people should be in church," he said. "I hope they behave themselves and keep their clothes on, but I'm not sure they will because strippers are trained to take off their clothes."

The New Braunfels City Council has been cracking down on rowdy behavior on the Comal and Guadalupe rivers in recent months, banning volume drinking devices better known as beer bongs, increasing the maximum fine for noise ordinance violations, and prohibiting sound amplification on the river between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.

A new ordinance banning containers with a liquid volume of 5 ounces or less — an attempt to ban Jell-O shots and the associated litter — will take effect after the next city council meeting.

Mayor Bruce Boyer said he thought it was unfortunate that the San Antonio club is taking advantage of the situation "to get free publicity."

"And all we're trying to do is make it safe and pleasant for anybody 8 to 80 to come and have a safe and enjoyable river experience," he said.

Oh, get over yourself, Mr. Valentine.

I think it's a good time. People who don't want to go tubing with strippers will be in church, and they can do their recreation later, when the sort of people who would pay $25 to go tubing with strippers won't be on the river.

Easy enough... :)

Been there, done that.
In recent years, the guadalupe river in New Braunfels has become a place that you would not take your family. Lots of drunks, underage drinking, rowdiness, profane language and activities. I say kudos to those trying to clean it up.
I stopped taking my family there and started going to the Frio river which runs through Concan and Garner State Park. A much more family friendly area for a leisurely float down the river.
There are teens and drinking here also, but not the craziness that I have seen on the Guadalupe and Comal.

Actually, it's pretty sad. Tubing in New Braunfels used to be a great way to spend a summer day with the family.

Sign up for the trip and float down the river with 3 strippers and 50 fat sweaty guys.

Someone who's had a little more coffee than me? :-).

I sympathize with the city council. We used to live near that area, and enjoyed visiting the parks and swimming in the river. Just as with Spring Break beach destinations, municipalities can choose to be either a drunkenness-and-nudity destination, or a general-recreation destination, but it's very hard to have both in a limited space.

It's interesting to see the responses here compared to DU:

I agree. I don't take my family to places where there's going to be rowdy behavior.

My daughter and her children went with a church group to a place in Arkansas recently. As a teen, she had gone tubing on the Guadalupe.

Actually, it's pretty sad.

No kidding. Some friends of ours took their two daughters there for their birthday earlier this month, as they have BDs two weeks apart. The oldest is 20 and the younger is 13. Mom had to apologize to them for the behavior of the tubers.

The further they got down the river, the worse it was. Garbage, nudity and underage drinking was not the worst. They actually came across an orgy on the bank. That was the end of the tubing expedition.

Well the understanding is that the Comal is the family river and the Lupe is for all the fun. The Comal is almost surrounded now with New Brunsfel, but the majority of the Lupe that most people float is outside city limits. Of course the end of it is in city limits and that is were most of cracking down has been. A friend of mine, that lives on the San Marcos which is nearby, says that most people are migrating to another nearby river that doesn't pass through New Brunsfels or San Marcos. So I wouldn't be surprised if the two towns continue cracking down that the Lupe at least will become void of people. The Comal has a water park next to the spring which will keep families and visitors coming every year.
