ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - July 19, 2006 - A University of Illinois researcher had discovered a fourth copy of a rare letter Abraham Lincoln had written by to the nation's governors in 1861.
The letter John Lupton found Tuesday in the Lehigh County Historical Society's holdings was one Lincoln wrote as part of an unsuccessful ratification process for a constitutional amendment Congress adopted during the term of his predecessor, President James Buchanan, that would have made slavery the law of the land.
The president remembered for abolishing slavery had been willing to push the amendment as "kind of a carrot to the Southern states" if that would preserve the union, said Lupton, associate director of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln Project of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
"But even by that point, it was too late. By that time, the Southern states felt Lincoln's election was an affront," Lupton said. In fact, the letter discovered in Allentown was addressed to "His Excellency the Governor of the State of Florida," which had seceded from the union two months earlier.
Until Tuesday, only three of the letters were known to have survived. "It's a very cool document," Lupton said.
Joseph Garrera, the historical society director, said he will consult with the society's board to determine the best way to display the document and try to figure out exactly who donated the letter.
So if skin color has nothing to do with being a True Southerner, then you should have no problem with the majority of black southerners and white southerners saying it's time to retire the confederate flag because of how it has been abused by democrats and other racists?
don't you understand that your base premises about our CSA flag are laughably simplistic,FALSE & based solely on KNOWING, LEFTIST/socialist LIES???
lol AT you!

My basic premise is that since the civil war it has been used mostly by Democrats and other racists in the south and to date you have never been able to disprove that fact.
However I still await some sort of reasonable debate from you as soon as you stop throwing the temper tantrums of a two year old.
Are you denying that the southern white segregationists were the first to politicize the CBF after WW2 [with nary a peep from the so-called cultural heritage crowd btw], or that they went on using the CBF as a symbol white opposition to federal civil rights for decades after that?
i see no point in arguing with you, until you figure out that you've been LIED TO & made a FOOL of.

Your posts aren't intellectually enlightening, but their sheer unhinged-ness rarely fails to lighten my mood.
in point of fact, BOTH the UDC & the SCV went to state/federal courts NUMEROUS TIMES over about a 10-year period & sued the racists for desecrating our flag of HEROES & dixie MARTYRS.
the courts ERRED (as the courts did on "flag burning"!) in saying that "desecrating a flag" was FREE SPEECH. it is lawless ACTION, which is NOT protected by the 1st Amendment, any more than committing a criminal assault is.

when the HATERS from DAMNyankeeland STOP lying about our ancestors, our flag, our CSA memorials, i will happily return to doing scholarly things.
otoh, i will NOT sit by & be silent in the face of INTENTIONAL libel of our families, flags, memorials and/or the TRUE CAUSE.

The politicization of the CBF began in 1948 with the State's Rights Party whose slogan was "Segregation Forever". It remained a political symbol of theirs through the 1964. George Wallace (pictured above) ably used the CBF after that as a divisive political symbol until well into the 1970s. During this time the CBF was adopted by known hate gruops like the KKK.
So with regard to the UDC/SVC lawsuits I guess my question to you STAND would be "Do you really believe that waiting 30 years to complain about the misuse of the CBF constitute a valid legal arguement, or does decades long inaction about the politicization of the CBF invalidate the groups more recent claims of cultural heritage preservation?"
in point of fact, you HAVE no facts on your side. just IGNORANCE of the truth, REVISIONIST nonsense & BILGE.

The only thing false and ignorant around here is yourcontinued claims about them.
Feel free to actually try to disprove them with a reasoned argument at any time.
If either of you two fine southern gentlemen can prove that, I'd be happy to see it, but I seriously doubt you can find even one instance where either organization has sued a known racist organization such as the Klu Klux Klan to prevent them from using the Confederate flag.
furthermore, your EYES & MIND are TIGHTLY CLOSED against anything that makes your hate-FILLED, anti-dixie PREJUDICE & IGNORANT/REVISIONIST opinion look DUMBER, than it demonstrably is.
NO PROOF, regardless of the source, is good enough for you. go do your OWN research & you can see for yourself that you are FOOLISH, as well as terminally IGNORANT of the TRUTH!

NOBODY (with the possible exception of "Mr SPIN", the BIGOT & DUMB-bunny) is FOOLED by your hate-FILLED nonsense .
peddle your REVISIONIST BILGE, elsewhere. like on DU for instance.

So are you suggesting that photo of George Wallace making a political speech in front of a CBF is photoshopped?
Bagdad Bob has more credibility than you do on this one STAND...
So you deny that the KKK used the Confederate flag at it's rallies in towns across America?
They sure as HELL did when they invaded our town where I lived in Pennsylvania and similiar things happened down in Maryland as well.
Don't try to deny that, although I'm sure, judging from this thread, that you will.
This is interesting because I recently learned that the Spainish colony in Florida was the first colony to ban slavery, as slavery had already been banned in Spain.
Of course he will deny and then slander, since that is the robotic agenda of the neo-confederate rabble rouser's.
And the rest of the unsavory flock belong to the....
