Rare Lincoln Letter Found in Allentown

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - July 19, 2006 - A University of Illinois researcher had discovered a fourth copy of a rare letter Abraham Lincoln had written by to the nation's governors in 1861.

The letter John Lupton found Tuesday in the Lehigh County Historical Society's holdings was one Lincoln wrote as part of an unsuccessful ratification process for a constitutional amendment Congress adopted during the term of his predecessor, President James Buchanan, that would have made slavery the law of the land.

The president remembered for abolishing slavery had been willing to push the amendment as "kind of a carrot to the Southern states" if that would preserve the union, said Lupton, associate director of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln Project of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

"But even by that point, it was too late. By that time, the Southern states felt Lincoln's election was an affront," Lupton said. In fact, the letter discovered in Allentown was addressed to "His Excellency the Governor of the State of Florida," which had seceded from the union two months earlier.

Until Tuesday, only three of the letters were known to have survived. "It's a very cool document," Lupton said.

Joseph Garrera, the historical society director, said he will consult with the society's board to determine the best way to display the document and try to figure out exactly who donated the letter.

"for dixie partisans the war was a battle for FREEDOM from a faraway government which southerners increasingly viewed as intrusive & potentially dictatorial. they wanted OUT of the union AND were willing to die to be FREE. (the soldiers, sailors & marines of the CSA saw themselves as being exactly the same as the heroes of 1776."

Therein lies the foolishness, stupidity, and delusional thinking of the secessionists that obviously still percolates in the dark, dank recesses of a few small minds over one hundred years after the fact. The colonists in 1776 chafed at taxation without representation, the southern Democrats of 1861 chafed at losing elections. There was every opportunity to negotiate, or resolve a mechanism for secession via the courts, but they choose to start a war in which they would have their asses handed to them four years later.

actually, Jeff Davis was a GOOD military officer & had been a HERO in the Mexican War.

he was a lousy POTCSA, though.

i'd guess that "he did his best". sometimes your BEST just isn't good ENOUGH!

IF anyone here acts like a KKK-idiot it is YOU & "Mr SPIN" the BIGOT.

BOTH of you are clueLESS AND obviously half-educated/half-intelligent HATERS.

head over to DU & take "Mr SPIN" dancing out the door with you, as you go. you'll be VERY happy together, over there.

your post is a CLASSSIC case of, "i don't REALLY know anything about the period, but i'll "pop off" & maybe someone will not notice that i'm just passing along my PERSONAL, UNfounded OPINIONS, as if i actually knew something".

PITY that NOBODY is fooled by your post.

If that was his best, then his best was great...for the Union.

your opinion is noted. i don't necessarily disagree with you (occasionally you say something SMART, when you're not posting NONSENSE to fool the RUBES in the "DY coven" and/or propaganda.), though MANY noted scholars would.

Well, if you know so much about the period, why can't you point out where the post is wrong? Did the southern states not have representation in 1861? Not even you can be that loony, can you? Tell me, what exactly did the southern states do to resolve their differences aside from secession? Did they get behind a single candidate to defeat Lincoln in the election? Did they try to impeach Lincoln? Did they try to block his policies in Congress? Did they sue the federal government? Introduce amendments? Call for a Constitutional Convention? What? No, they were Sorelosermans and stomped off in a huff.

We an agree on this much. The Confederacy talked big, but couldn't back it up.

The war's long since over. You should get over it.

Do You know how soon all you confederate wannabees have lost on these threads?

AS soon as stainless banner issues an "old dixie ping" and STAND comes a running like a trained puppy.

After that we get to kick around STAND until we get tried.

But seriously the reason I personally stopped defending the confederacy is that anyway you look at it, it was run by Democrats and I'm not here to defend democrats.

actually, i feel that the ever-increasing power of the unionist political machine was anathema to the southerners.

in point of fact, as i've said, they believed that every day that they were LESS well represented in the government & would forever be SUBORDINATE to the more populous north, if they did NOT separate from the north.

as to the FACT, that the war has been over for a century & a half, i don't think ANYONE would disagree. otoh, what happened to MY family and to THOUSANDS of other southern families, who were victimized by the HATE-filled, cruel, sanctimonious, hypocritical, northern invading army, CAN NOT & (imVho) MUST NOT be forgotten.

ONLY a heartfelt APOLOGY to each victimized family will "bind up the still hemorrhaging wounds" that SO MANY southerners still feel.

fwiw, asking us "to just get over it" is the same as asking a victim of the Nazi HOLOCAUST to "just get over it". would YOU ask a Jew to "just forget it", if at least 92 members of his/her family had been slaughtered like cattle , as mine was????

you are NEW here. (WELCOME to the continuing war between Blue & Gray, which goes on & on, absent gunfire.)

if you'll look at some other WBTS threads, you'll find that i've DEBUNKED the same questions, over & over. i get tired of saying the same things, repeatedly.

what you posted is neither NEW nor ORIGONAL! rather it is REVISIONIST NONSENSE (which the LEFTISTS/REVISIONISTS are well aware is BUNK & HOKEM!)and is UNsupportable on the FACTS.

So, you agree with me. The southerns did nothing other than take up arms to solve their problems. Like Sorelosermen, they took their ball and went home.

Also, as for your holocaust analogy, it doesn't hold. It's more like the Japanese complaining about the A bomb. I say don't bitch when you start the fight and then can't finish it.

MY family started NOTHING. they as AmerIndians had NO VOTE or POLITICAL INFLUENCE & were POOR, subsistence farmers, as the VAST majority of the victims of the "filth that flowed down from the north" were.

probably 90% of those who were raped/robbed/assaulted/tortured/murdered were AmerIndians,Asians,Blacks (both slave & free) Catholics,Jews, Latinos, "mixed-bloods" AND "the poorest of the poor whites".

FEW "persons of quality" (read: the southern ELITES) were victimized. the dixie elites lost NOTHING in most cases except MONEY & PROPERTY. frequently they lost NOTHING!

i also will point out that "the crusaders who came south to free the slaves" FREQUENTLY freed them from BEING ALIVE!

did you "get the message" YET??

"the hecatomb in dixie" was about northern RACISM,PLUNDER & LOOTING, PRIVILEDGE, MONEY & the CRUELTY of the union armies. it was war "for fun & profit"!
