About 1.7 million years ago the human ancestor homo erectus stayed warm in Europe by throwing on smelly skins of dead animals. By the time the much more human Neanderthals dominated Europe around 300,000 years ago, they were wearing more fitted, more tailored leather clothes, Adovasio said. Modern humans emerged in Africa around 130,000 years ago. By the time we got to Europe around 45,000 years ago, we were far beyond the stereotypical cave-wear.

Good last line.

This is one of Jay Matternes' reconstructions of a neanderthal:

And this is an example of "non representatinoal art" from the Indus Valley civilization:

Matternes had no way of knowing how much the brow ridges would show on a live subject, and the forhead and jawline are identical. Somebody may have forgotten to tell the artists of Mohenjo Daro that neanderthals were supposed to have died out 40,000 years ago...

I believe that the food of choice for neanderthals is roast duck with mango salsa, unless of course, they don't have much of an appetite.

I did research it. I had the tv on, and that commercial was aired just 2 minutes before I posted my previous comment. I stand by the statement that given a choice between grilled salmon or roast duck, they will choose the roast duck, especially if it is served with mango salsa. :)

Even funnier than that commercial is the one that preceded it, where it showed the guy on the sound stage filming the commercial, he makes the statement about neanderthals, and the guy operating the boom microphone just happens to be a neanderthal and throws the microphone down and stomps off the set. First time I saw that commercial I was howling with laughter.

Yeah, but that's ok, because none of those guys are still around to be offended by it. :)

I think the youngest skeleton ever found is 27,000 years old.

Ever consider that people might have started dissolving neanderthal remains in sulphuric acid 27000 years ago just to @@@@ with us??
