FR Folding@Home Project Update -- We're in the Top 85 of all teams with 8.3 Million points

Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 351 members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 85th place (with 908 active CPUs - 47,400 completed Work Units and nearly 8.5 million points).

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 19 folding threads)

Actually, now that I think about it, a problem people have always had with AMD based computers is their lack of a total integrated solution that is stable. If AMD could produce their own stable, high performance chipsets with integrated graphics then that would be good. For office clients, an Intel CPU, chipset, motherboard and integrated graphics is the standard.
I do wonder how this will effect nvidia on AMD systems.

This may be of some interest to folders:
Researchers believe they have found a second code in DNA in addition to the genetic code.

The genetic code specifies all the proteins that a cell makes. The second code, superimposed on the first, sets the placement of the nucleosomes, miniature protein spools around which the DNA is looped. The spools both protect and control access to the DNA itself...

Scientists Say They’ve Found a Code Beyond Genetics in DNA

Woo-Hoo!
I'm in the Top 200 on our team!

(Hey, sometimes ya gotta too your own horn; nobody else will.)

TECHNICAL NOTE:
My CPU was shutting down for what I thought were heat-related reasons until it did it at about 3:00am. I throttled back the CPU demand on the FAH service to 95%, and raised the process priority to "low". I haven't had any shutdowns since, and we've just come through five days of 105F+ weather.

Now, my experiment, going forward, is to bump the CPU demand percentage up one point at a time until I see another failure, then I can back it off one percent and be relatively sure I'm folding at optimum speed.

Glad to see you got your power back on. What's the situation like there in St. Louis?

Hope you had a way to stay cool.
