Depleted uranium is an attractive munition to use by some in the military because it cuts through metal like butter. The problem is that it "aerosolizes" into "nano particles" along it's trajectory from the moment it leaves the barrel.
So far, the US military admits using over 3 thousand tons of the stuff in Gulf War II. Some analysts say the number is closer to 5,000 tons.
With a 4.5 billion year half-life, the stuff is not possible to clean up, according to Major Doug Rokke. He literally wrote the book on du cleanup for the US military during the Gulf War I. He says that half his team is dead and that he carries over a thousand times acceptable radiation in his body.

Welcome to Free Republic.
Where are you from?

You are an idiot lacking understanding of the material.
With a 4.5 billion year half-life, U-235 pretty much isn't radioactive. It's just a very dense metal, with a cousin, U-235, that is useful for making reactor fuel and beginner bombs.

Only problem troll boy. We have used no depleted uranium in either Yugo or Afganistsan. Those are tank killer round for use against level 1 Heavy Armor. We had no need to use either in Afga or Yugo. So it is just another Leftist propaganda lie.

only nine days after the "shock and awe" carpet bombing of Baghdad, started in March of 2003. Since when did "Shock and Awe" become "carpet bombing"? Someone over at that liberal rag needs to read up on what constitutes carpet bombing.

Depleted uranium causes global warming too. Only Al Gore can save us from roasting alive with high blood sugar. A consensus of scientists backs this up. Just ask AP.
PS: I don't want to confuse the issue but there is also strong evidence to suggest that tax cuts for the rich serves as a catalyst in the diabetes and global warming reactions.

The hysterics surrounding DU and radiation have been well overblown over the last decade and a half. Some "Chicken Little's" like Rokke use this to attempt to make a name for themselves. Others attempt to use this to try to "disarm" the military organizations who use DU to annihilate armored vehicles.
While there is a minuscule "risk" involved with DU, it's not nearly as "bad" as the "Chicken Little's" would have you believe. More hysterical squealing from those who believe they know best, IMO.

which identified depleted uranium in the British atmosphere only nine days after the "shock and awe" carpet bombing of Baghdad, started in March of 2003.Did they look for it BEFORE March 03? If they didn't, the data is meaningless.
"Carpet bombing"? Please. Get you're facts straight.

Fine uranium dust, vaporized into a poison radioactive gas by exploding uranium bombs, missiles and bullets, hitches a ride on dry desert winds to circle the globe in days.
You'd think one of the many embedded reporters would have mentioned exploding uranium bombs and missiles...I've heard them called Nuclear Weapons and they usually attract quite a lot of attention when they go off....

Dude. The radium in your wrist-watch (assuming you have graduated to the ones with hands) is more radioactive than depleted uranium ammunition.
Does the word 'depleted' have much meaning to you?
