My Dog was Savagely Attacked by Two Pitbulls
7/3/2006 | GVnana

Posted on 07/03/2006 7:10:02 PM PDT by GVnana

My sweet little cocker spaniel dog was nearly killed by two pitbulls who jumped a fence to get to her. She crossed a nearby driveway and they got her.

By the time my neighbors got the dogs off, (within seconds) the pits had grounded my dog, tore out her left eye, dislocated her left leg, and left ten gaping wounds in her body. She couldn't move or even howl in pain. That's how I found her.

My dog weighs 40 pounds. She's large for her breed. She's AKC registered and pedigreed. She was a very beautiful dog.

This happened 10 days ago and I'm still stunned at the viciousness of the attack. I don't know if a human child would have survived what those animals did.

I have since learned that homeowner's insurance will not cover pitbulls.

I'm posting this as a warning and also as an invitation to comment.

I have never blamed the victim. I have stated that prudence, nature itself, demands we take care of our own. And if it had been a child, I would be the first in line to destroy the pits. The ultimate responsibility lies with the owners, who should have realized they owned a liability. However, a dog under human control should never have been in the neighbor's drive.

The vet filed a report with animal control. There is a previous report on these dogs.

I contacted the landlords today and informed them that I wanted to make a claim. I already know that their homeowners won't cover pitbulls, but I don't know if THEY know that. Hopefully they can put some pressure on these kids to get rid of these dogs.

I intend to persue a claim in small claims court. I don't know if I'll prevail, because my dog WAS on their property. But I might convice the city fathers that our current law is inadequate, and press for an ordinance outlawing this breed within the city limits. If you can't get recourse against the owners because there is no insurance, it seems it would make sense to remove the animals from the community.

Your point is well-taken. I will research the ordinances.

Rollerblades. I try not to complain too much though, because I half killed my parents during my own childhood.

Their hair turned grey from raising me and now they take revenge by coking my kids up on oreos and then drive off laughing maniacally.

Too bad you didn't keep your pretty little dog inside where she would be save from bigger, stronger dogs.

I have been suffering my share of self-incriminations lately, but isn't there a point where an animal breed that is notoriously capable of killing should be kept from being a threat to others?

I'm sorry your companion was attacked and I hope her recovery will be swift and complete. After giving her my best wishes I now have to say I don't understand why you seem to separate yourself from any of the blame. The Pit Bulls were probably protecting their territory while you were allowing your dog to run loose in the neighbourhood. I at one time owned a Pit Bull who was a sweetheart and the biggest baby you could have in a dog UNTIL she thought someone was threatening me, at that point she would have protected me with her life. I feel quite confident my mini-Dachshund would do the same.

Since you were at fault for allowing your dog to roam around the neighbourhood at will, I don't think you'd have any luck with the courts.

Is your dogs eye going to be okay?

Probably not. The vets put it back into it's socket. The vet took the stitches out on Saturday. Her eye is not responding to light. He says it's possible that her sight could return. I'll spare you the gorey details on what it looks like right now.

It's one thing for an animal to protect it's territory. It's another thing to own a killer breed.

That's what I mean by dogs being socialized. I don't care how little or big the dog. They have to know the rules. And inside a fence or house they can't know. Little dogs in big dogs driveway it's a good idea to run. When you run far enough you're ok. If you just can't run far enough, cower down. But your a house dog, never been around many other dogs, so these big dogs rush you and you aint got enough sense to run you think, hey, lets play. Next thing you know you're dog food.

Just wondering, are there more people murdered or more dogs killed in dogfights?

I hope you are able to recover your vet bills and get these dogs sent up the river also.

I have no patience for pits, rotts or wolf hybrids which are all popular with the druggies around here. They are all poorly fed, badly socialized and frequently unleashed and loose. Like having loaded guns laying around on the sidewalks.

I agree with everything you say. My Dad hunted. I grew up around sporting dogs. Every dog in the neighborhood knew how to behave and take care of their own business. But no one owned dogs that were capable of harming humans. It wouldn't be tolerated.

I've asked myself, "What would Grandpa do?" .22 bullets are real cheap.

Pit bull owners whose beasts inflict injury on other people or their property should face felony charges as if they themselves intentionally inflicted the harm or caused the damage. They should rot in jail and their animals should be put down. If at trial they make some cockamamie attempt to blame the victim for the harm their their beasts caused, their sentences should be doubled.

Citizens should also have the legal right to kill any pit bull found wandering loose off its owner's property.

I'd go further and suggest a bounty of $500 for each pit bull hide, but I'd be willing to wait to see if the other measures reduced the attacks first.

Your talking to someone who has a scar on her leg that was caused by a Cocker Spaniel when she was younger. Does that mean I should consider Cocker Spaniels to be a killer breed?

Your dog wandered into their territory apparently with your permission. Why can't you see where the blame really belongs. There is no such thing as a 'killer breed'. Any dog or animal can be trained as a killer. Just because a Pit Bull has a jaw thats strong and like a vice does not mean their breed are killers.

I'm so sorry for your dog. But, unfortunatly, all animals are capable of killing. That would be a good thing to remember for the future. I'm not being sarcastic, just realistic.

There are bad animals just like there are bad humans. A .22 behind the ear will work for either.

I spoke with another woman in town whose dog was attacked by a pitbull recently. When she contacted the owner and described the injuries to the dog, the owner laughed. LAUGHED.

Without even reading the thread, I imagine you'll get at least 100 replies that tell you that it's all in your mind, because MY pit bull is sweeter than my grandma, yada yada yada...

SOME pit bull I have seen are gentle and even tempered, but THE MAJORITY are highly unpredictable, very easily provoked, and relentless when they attack.

Another poorly socialized human being projecting themselves through their dog.

Yes. And I have a scar on my leg caused by a human.

I don't agree with your premise that there are no "killer breeds". That is precisely what pitbulls were bred for. Cockers are sporting dogs, they're bred for flushing out small game -- not tearing other animals to pieces.

If a child had wandered into that driveway and were attacked, would you say it was the child's fault?

There are some things people shouldn't have to live with, and the threat of harm from a vicious animal is one of them.

Well you pay for your raising.

I can say though that I never GOT CAUGHT, much, doing anything to embarass my parents. I think kids these days think it's sport to embarass the elders as much as possible.

Times have changed and I guess I've gotta change also. Or at least accept the changes. Or not. Jeeze, I can't believe I'm even talking like this. I'm go'in down raising hell!!

"If a child had wandered into that driveway and were attacked, would you say it was the child's fault?"

I usually don't respond to a thread as often as this and for that I apologize... But..If a child had wandered, how far, 3 blocks or whatever, and was attacked, I would blame the parents. Sorry.
