My Dog was Savagely Attacked by Two Pitbulls
7/3/2006 | GVnana

Posted on 07/03/2006 7:10:02 PM PDT by GVnana

My sweet little cocker spaniel dog was nearly killed by two pitbulls who jumped a fence to get to her. She crossed a nearby driveway and they got her.

By the time my neighbors got the dogs off, (within seconds) the pits had grounded my dog, tore out her left eye, dislocated her left leg, and left ten gaping wounds in her body. She couldn't move or even howl in pain. That's how I found her.

My dog weighs 40 pounds. She's large for her breed. She's AKC registered and pedigreed. She was a very beautiful dog.

This happened 10 days ago and I'm still stunned at the viciousness of the attack. I don't know if a human child would have survived what those animals did.

I have since learned that homeowner's insurance will not cover pitbulls.

I'm posting this as a warning and also as an invitation to comment.

A warning for what? Are the pit bulls coming for me? I have some .357SIG for them.

How come they weren't chained? The owners don't seem very smart.

I'd kill the dogs.

You don't say, but I hope you reported this to your local police. At the very least, this would count as a "first strike" against the pitbulls, in most communities.

I am very, very sorry about your dog. It is terribly hard to lose a beloved pet, especially in such a shocking manner.

Why didn't you have control of your animal?

Oops, my mistake -- I see that your dog did *not* die -- yay! I hope your pup is feeling better soon.

you were lucky it wasn't YOU.

our neighboor has two of them now - we are terrified here, especially when relatives visit with small nieces/nephews.

I'd sue the dogs owners, if you can find them, for vet bills and your and your dogs pain and suffering.

Just because homeowners insurance doesn't cover pit bulls, doesn't mean you still can't sue the dog owners in civil court for your lost pet's value.

It will be harder to win though if your dog was running loose and not on a leash or in your own yard, as your original post seems to indicate your pet was unsupervised and loose.

Is your dogs eye going to be okay?

definitely, sue them. at a minimum, it will force them to contact their homeowners insurance agent. even if they don't settle, or you don't prevail in court, many insurance companies will drop policy holders who own vicious dogs.

I found out that there has been a previous report to animal control on these dogs. The owners are mid-20ish marrieds who rent a home in the neighborhood. They have an 18-month-old baby. Possibly the type to think it's "cool" to own animals that could potentially harm a human. They have not made any offers to me.

They have told other neighbors that they are fortifying their fence and trying to locate a home in the country for the dogs.

Why didn't you have control of your animal?

Good idea! Then the Pits could have jumped the fence to attack both her and her dog./sarc

Are you actually implying that her immediate presence would have stopped 2 Pits that jumped a fence to attack?

Or are you implying that no one should be in the neighbors drive where the Pits could be tempted to attack?

So sorry to hear about your Cocker. I hope it is doing better by now. It is lucky to have you as its owner.

You need a lawyer. The owners of the pit bulls need to be hurt. The fact that their homeowners' insurance won't cover them is a good thing.

Get the cops involved RIGHT NOW and then go find your own pit bull in a pinstriped suit and sic 'im on your neighbors.

Do not speak with your neighbors or the landlord on this matter any further. Get a lawyer involved and let him do the talking for you.

I'm sorry for your dog. I hope her other eye was not affected.

Any sign of internal injuries and where is she now? Some sort of animal hospital?

Prayers for a recovery from this horrible attack.
